Any DIY pedal builders on TB? Strut your stuff!

i just completed a Maestro FZ-1B (two transistor, V1 version). they are very rare. i used vintage 2N3860's in it. the same ones as in the original). It sounds completely different than the V2 (4 transistor version). both versions ran on a single AA battery, but i used a voltage regulator circuit to drop my 9V power supply to 1.5V so i can run them with a 1spot. like the V2, it also barely reaches unity volume so i added a clean boost to its output, and a relayed true bypass..........

2 questions:

1) Where are people ordering their parts from these days? I need a few caps etc. Usually I'd just order from smallbear, but it's been a long time since I've ordered any parts. Where are people ordering from these days?

2) Has anyone played around with the coupling caps on muffs? I have a muff where I replaced the 100n caps with 220n caps and it sounds pretty good. But wondering if it's overkill. I have a new russian muff that I replaced a few caps with 220s but it's almost too much. I'd like to dial it back and wondering the best way. Halve the value to like 150ish... or will just changing one or two caps get me there?

I just read that the Pharoah uses 470n coupling caps throughout (not 47n as sometimes is reported). That sounds almost too high/too much bass, but people like it.
 
1. Usually Mouser or Stompbox parts. Both have pretty quick shipping.

2. Just did this myself, 220nF seemed to be a little much and went with 150nF. I changed all of them but thought about just doing the input and output.
470nF seems redonkulous to me.

nice! Why did you settle on 150–aside from the obvious? What flavor of muff? I have a Russian and a violet rams head I’m working with.

EDIT: just checked out your instagram. Nice builds! Any other good tricks you've picked up for building muffs?

Tried the 150nF as en experiment. The jury is still out. It might be to much bass and I might go back to the 100nF. Kinda hard to say what flavor as its a mutt. Theres a little bit of everything in there. I had some pcbs made up and have been experimenting. I posted a pic of the build earlier in this thread. The artwork on the pedal is nebulous if you want to look at it. *Found it , back on page 103.

The MM3 band Pre schematic came from a post on TB . I think DiCosmo started it a while back. Sounds pretty good. It lacks a slight bit in the Mids but overall not bad. I have a project bass I may try it in. I need to get some stacked potentiometers.

I’m very pleased with the PIC bypass.
It is an open source from CODA Effects. It works great . I had my doubts because I really struggle with coding and things of that nature. It did take 2 tries on the coding but , Viola success in the end and I learned a little bit about coding. I also learned I have a lot more to learn about coding, lol.

The Nebulous is just another muff, albeit it sounds GREAT on bass. It’s hard to say exactly what it’s based on. It uses 2 - 2N5457 and 2 - 1N4001 for clipping diodes. I socketed the 2N5457s so I could try different options. It has great low end retention and probably one of the best Muffs I’ve heard , ( based on personal preference)

I posted this to Pedal PCB, but thought I'd post it here as well in case anyone has thoughts (I'm sure you do) about bassifying the muff circuit:

I think if you are going this route, there are a few things that matter to bass and that you can socket:

1: Clipping caps: seems like 47n is ideal, but worth experimenting
2: Coupling caps: standard is 100n. I thought that 220n might be a little high. I have read that it may not matter if you change all of them.
3: C2, C5, C8 (at least on the Mudbunny schematic): Russian/Ram's are 470 and the Civil War is 430. Civil War has a tighter bottom end with a little more grit on top. Russian/Ram's have a looser bottom end with a smoother top. Both are good, just depends on what you'd like. I haven't tried 450, but would like to.

4: Clipping diodes: all kinds of things possible. Leave first ones out for more low end. Standard seems SI first pari and then a switch on the second pair. I like LED in the 2nd set.

Resistors: Of course, these matter, esp in making it higher or lower gain and the overall sound that makes the version—gives it the fuzziness of a ram's head. In terms of the bass response, though, the resistors seem to matter less. If you aren't using a mids switch/pot, then there are some things that do matter: R18/R19 (on madbean) 22/20 for Russian/Civil War and 33/33 for Ram's Head. Higher values roughly equal more mids. They work in tandem with C10/C11, so if you are thinking mids, think about how those two caps/resistors work together.

Transistors: Lots of people say they don't really matter as long as you get the HFE that you want. I've experimented a bunch and in the mix of things, it's hard to say what really matters. I will say that the W&C TFR uses 5088's for the first three and then a mystery transistor in the last/volume position (Q4 on madbean). The last transistor determines output. So, if you want to mess around with transistors a little bit, just make the first three 5088's and experiment with the last one.

And, of course, everything is interactive. You can get lost in the weeds with the intricacies of the muff. I think that the W&C TFR is the best one that I've tried. It has a very mellow, laid back tone that you can have on all the time. They have figured out a really sweet deep dive combo of parts. That said, side jack only without clipping options and only a flat mids option... so the form factor isn't ideal for modern pedalboards. So, it's still worth rolling your own AND I think that if you experiment with the caps, you will get pretty close to the bass tone/response that works for you.

When experimenting and listening to the results, ask yourself:
  • How tight is the bass? Does it matter if it's tight or loose? Does that matter to how it sits in the mix?
  • Is the bass heavy but the rest of the signal kind of weak/ill defined? Does that matter?
  • Where is the signal being clipped? Top end, or all through?
  • Is there enough clean bass coming through?
  • Is the lower end clipped in a way that works or makes the signal ultimately less distinct?
  • If I put a boost/drive in front of the muff, does it resolve some of the eq issues?
  • Is the overall sound strong/intense, or looser and less intense? What works better?
  • Are there dynamics to the tone? Or is it one intense pulse?
Pitfalls: See what sits in the mix best and not what is the loudest/gnarliest/fuzziest. A little subtlety can be good.
  • Adding too much bass
  • Overpowering with the mids
  • Clipping the whole signal so that it gets mushy
  • Making it too high gain

The Big Muff Circuit Guide that's on the Kitrae site is a wealth of information. You can get lost for hours reading up on the history and information that he has collected.
Some other fun mods are adding a mid boost switch, tone bypass switch in addition to experimenting with caps and resistors as you mentioned.
To me Stripboard is a great option for experimenting.
Thoughts have crossed my mind of doing a diode/led selector switch. Kinda along the lines of the volt thrower.
If you haven't built or tried one the 74 V2 Rams Head " White Can " version is a low-end monster. I love it.
The Muff circuit is a great circuit to play with.

Added two more Parasit Studio pedals to my collection.
U-235 PLL-type clean octaver. Tracking is limited on bass. It's okay above G and glitchy down to D. I like the detune mode more than the up or down octaves.
Xorcist stutter fuzz and ringmod. The squarewave fuzz sounds good and stutter mode is spooky. The ringmod sounds like possessed pea soup vomit.

i used a Benson guitar preamp pedal and modded it for bass.

I did the same on my benson preamp pedal clone. Sounds great.

I used the Son of Ben pedalpcb board and: ended up switching out C6 and C8 for 330n (what I had on hand, though I think anything 100n and above would have been fine). That really opened up the pedal and makes it sound a lot fuller and more useful on bass. Also omitted C5 so that there's more gain before breakup.

@johnk_10 what did you do to mod yours? Esp to get more low end?
