Any DIY pedal builders on TB? Strut your stuff!

Back to filters for a second.... MusicPCB had the MeatSphere back in stock (I called it a Meatball in my previous post but I cant edit it) The wife gave me the 'another pedal build?' look, but then I showed her the prices of a used Mutron lll. 'Get it'
Ha, that one was easy!

Nice! Please post updates since I'm interested too but looks pretty daunting for my second build. For now I'll probably build a fuzzface clone for my guitarist while I choose a filter.

I have found many good things on OSHPark but what I find frustrating is the lack of BOMs. I am taking the trip down the diy PCB rabbit hole. I have some materials ordered and I have a small decal cutter . I have been doing a lot of research and if it works out I will be having a lot of fun for a long time. I’m not going to make the same mistake I did when I got into stripboard. I started by buying a lot of the wrong passive components and ended up with a ton of 5% resistors I don’t even use, but I did get some breadboards for Christmas so there not a total loss. I’m gonna start with baby steps. The Mrs. got me the cutter as a gift for my pedal venture so I don’t get in any trouble for buying “ pedal related goodies” . I think she’s just happy I do this instead of drinking, lol. Come on mailman.

I've saved so much $ not smoking or drinking. All my friends in high school blew all their cash on that mess. I saved my $ up and bought a Pedulla Rapture.

As far as parts, dont feel bad. You might use them eventually. I have boxes and boxes (and boxes) of parts. It's nice to have a stash to experiment with.

I’m in , I have a bunch of alpha pots I could use them on. I sometimes find discounts on the pc pin pots so I buy them up . This is a great solution.

BTW, the gain stage and mixer/blender boards I mentioned upthread should ship in the next couple of days, and if all goes well in testing I'll get the shares up on OSH in a few weeks. Mouser's posted lead times are almost back to normal now, thankfully. It took them more than a week just to process my last order, which is no bueno.

And yep, lack of BOMs makes so many of those board shares essentially useless. I'll do my best to avoid that as I build up my contributions.

This thread moves fast! I've been busy myself, finishing a few things.

Bassifrass - this is a Effects Layout PCB of the Frantone Bassweet. As anything Frantone I've built so far, it's killer! Apparently a Muff, but with 2 GE transistors (Q2, Q3) and a different placement of the tone section. And it has Schottky diodes for clipping. I decided to add switches for both clipping locations because I like clipping options: once it's Schottky - none - SI and the other is Schottky - none - GE. Gives plenty of different sounds. Funny thing is, on guitar, with all the diodes lifted, it can sound (more or less) like the Plasma Pedal. :woot:

Harley Q - another PCB from Moonn, he did a lot o DBA lately and this is the Harmonic Transformer. One knob, 2 switches, 6 transistors. Wild fuzz, plays nice with bass, I like it, although one of the waveforms is significantly quieter - and almost a bit boring (for DBA). Maybe I messed up something?

Buzzaround - on Fuzzdog's PCB. Does what it does. Threw in a bit of "mojo" here and there. I like that kind of fuzz a lot, I've been using a Buzzaround made by somebody else for ages.

Oracle - I have the OG, by Monolith. It's one of my all time favorite fuzzes! So, when I stumbled across a vero layout, I just had to try it. It's my first real vero build and of course I had to troubleshoot it ... Something was touching something, I had to "recut" between those lines. Everything is so small with vero and then wires everywhere ...
I might build another one, adding "empty lines" on the vero, so that i have more space and can also be closer to the OG, using carbon comp resistors, fancy caps and the high gain GE transistors it calls for.
Still need to A/B it with the real deal.

Echo Bender - as from Casper Electronics, PCB by Moonn. Craaaaazy delay, super fun, just had a short ride so far, but it's a winner for sure.

What did you use for transistors in the Oracle. Thinking about building this one. Almost everything I build is on vero til recently. I just discovered I can make PCBs real easy. Ya, another rabbit hole.

I have 2x MP25A in there, their hFe is way too low, in the 40ies, but it still sounds pretty good with Density and Output dimed. I also tried some GT2307 that are in the upper 60ies, but that didn't change much to my ears, so I left the MP25A in there for the time being. I have some high gain GE transistors on order now and will get back to it, as I used sockets.

I really like this one a lot, simple - but a very cool unique sound. I also thought about checking out how make a PCB for this one for very short moment, but quickly decided to stay out of that rabbit hole.

I've never been satisfied with my vox v845 wah so since i had a colorsound wah here from a trade i traced it and built it into the vox shell along with five leds for maximum obnoxiousness

most of the components are recycled from organ amps I've torn down so i really only have time in it. doesn't have the cool cam mechanism of the colorsound (which i believe is the secret to its quick travel through the sweet spot) but still sounds good. used a larger inductor in hopes that it'll do double duty as a bass wah

I just built one up on a pcb. All I had was Some MP26Bs and some AC128s. I tried with both MP26s then did a mix. Ended up with Q1 being AC128 and Q2 being MP26. I haven't checked the Hfe yet. Need to find some OC76s

Are there any tutorials out there on how to trace a circuit? I can’t find much but I’m probably not looking in the right places.
 
I'm sure there are, with this i had the schematic and unit in front of me so i made a grid on the masking tape-covered board and did my best to place the components where the were on the original. drilled out the holes, inserted eyelets, then turned the board over and connected the dots on the bottom to show me where the traces would go. I'm sure there are much more efficient ways to do this but the guerilla style worked for me. would be a pain on a more complicated circuit

i built an oracle quite a while ago. i built it on vero but now i've etched a pcb for one (but haven't built it up yet). i had to audtion a lot of germ transistors until i got it to sound right. anyway here's a pic of it:

@johnk_10 . I have built many of your stripboard layouts and have long admired them and your gut shots of them and your pcb builds. One thing I don’t recall seeing is a picture of the solder side of any of your pcb builds. I am curious as to how you treat the solder side as I’m getting into diy pcbs. Do you solder mask ? My wife gifted me a Cricut Joy for Christmas last year and I have discovered that I can not only make the etching mask but discovered today I can effortlessly make a solder mask. The trick will be getting it lined up on the pcb straight. I’m waiting for some of those teeny tiny pcb drill bits to come in the mail. Would you drill first and then mask or mask first?
 
FuzzDog Moon Phaser finished... one of the better phasers I have built so now is on my little all-FuzzDog pedalboard: Logical Bass Pre / Ampegulator / Moon Phaser / Moo-Tron.
Loving your illuminated stomper switch rings...and I like your idea of an all analogue home build pedal board. I think you might have inspired me to build a small board to compliment my all digital board using my box of spare / redundant reference pedal!
