Any GHOST (the band) fans here??

Been a fan of Ghost and Volbeat long before the masses discovered them..

As far as Ghost goes...their schtick is pure genius...Think about it....they can drop and gain members at the drop of a hat...who would notice!?...cuts way down on that "well it's not the original line up" crap..... plus they can come and go in public without anyone knowing who they are...

Imagine being a famous rock star trying to vacation with the wife and kids, or trying to enjoy a steak or a movie in public...fans are great but there are some that just don't know when to quit...

also other famous musicians have stepped in form time to time to perform with the band as a nameless ghoul... including Dave Grohl and the cool thing is....nobody would ever know

And thank god for that. If they just sounded like some schnitty black metal band they would not be interesting at all.

I like these guys. I discovered them when they opened for Mastodon and Opeth a few years ago and bought the first album that night, although I have to admit I haven't really pursued them further than the occasional youtube video that crosses my path (such as in this thread). I don't get the people saying they're not original. What band do they sound like? Sure, all the elements they use have been there in the past, but I think they put them together in a fairly unique way.

Also don't get the "digital" sound criticisms. On the first album at least, the bass has a nice fat old school tone that would be right at home on a Diamond Head record or something like that (if any of those old albums were recorded halfway decently which they mostly weren't). The guitars tend to sound like old school Megadeth or Metallica, just that basic hard rock/metal tone. Simple but effective.

How did I miss this thread till now??? Big fan here and still bummed I missed them twice now in Dallas, once opening for King Diamond and again on their own headlong tour with Purson (another killer band, I'll post a bid below for those who haven't heard them). I personally dig the campy get-ups, as I think it Just adds to their general vibe. I haven't heard much of Cirice yet, but own both previous cds and the cover album on vinyl, and they all get regular play. My personal favorite track has to be Year Zero with Monstrance Clock being a close second since it was my first exposure to the band. Year Zero is just an amazing track to blast in my car though, I love it.


And Purson, such an awesome track:

I had first found out about this band two years ago, they have a really unique style and great sound. Papa Emeritus has such a empowering voice which goes perfectly with the melodic riffs. Being a bassist i fell in love with the bass riffs right away as they were so fluent and just simply Brutal. From the Pinnacle to the pit would be one of the best songs on Meliora (my opinion), all their songs are really great, but the best would have to be Secular Haze, because who doesn't enjoy that creepy circus riff.

The lineup for Rockfest 2016 was just announced this morning! Ghost is one of the many acts performing! If you are not familiar with Rockfest it is the largest single day rock festival in the country. Tickets are under $50 and they intentionally keep food and beer prices under $5 to make it affordable!
People come from all over the country for this festival and they usually have about fifty thousand people.

I'm one of the people falls into the category of respecting what they do, but finding them a little light weight for my tastes.
They are a well produced throw back to 70 and 80s metal with some nice hooks. They are very approachable and I like their "bit" with the costumes, and the secret order taking over the world thing. I think its fun. What kills me about them is the singers complete lack of power. The dude doesn't have to growl like a rottweiler, but there is no fire in his voice at all. No Ozzy, Dio, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford; heck there isn't even some Robert Plant in there. Their most recent CD is better than their previous efforts, but they only get a begrudging B- from me. They could easily get a B+ if their singer wasn't so nasal and monotone.

His voice is actually the main thing I first noticed and is what really got me interested, but I can see your viewpoint. He definitely does not have the range of those guys. But I love that kinda low key vocal style he does, as I'm also a huge fan of bands like Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd.

But, Papa does do some growling and different styles in his other bands where he's not Papa. In Ghost he sings kinda like....well....a Ghost would :)

They're a killer live band... the songs hit much harder live, IMO the vocals are better and grittier live (although I like the vocals fine on the recordings), and they're one of the few bands that really pulls off a theatrical stage concept well.

To be honest though, I don't find myself listening to them often. "Ritual" is a great tune, but otherwise the songs themselves don't have much lasting power for me. I might need to dig into their newer stuff more and see if that has changed.

I'm really hearing a big difference in Meloria and their older stuff. I can kinda see what you mean about not wanting to listen to it all the time, but Meloria is something I could keep on a constant loop. To me it combines elements of a lot of my favorite bands...Faith No More, Porcupine Tree, Floyd, Rush, Tool...etc. I was concentrating on some of the music earlier instead of vocals and it reminded me so much of old Faith No More!

I mean, why would the band confirm it? Bands always lie about everything.

There were rumours about Pink Floyd MONTHS before Live8, and of course they officially denied it until like 3 days later when they held their big press conference. Same thing with Led Zeppelin, oh, and every other band that is trying to keep a secret. Just like for the last 15 years, EVERY SINGLE ALBUM gets leaked at least a week before its release date (usually a month).
