Any validity to this idea?

Hey everybody,

I'm curious what people think about using an amp emulator through a small (well ok maybe not so small...)PA on stage as an amp. On the a Dave Matthews live DVD that I have the bass player using a meyer subs and top box. The sub if I remember correctly (I think he had two) was a double 18 cab and the top box was a 15 with 2inch compression driver (yes I am an audio guy and work with a bunch of meyer gear). This got me thinking, and then recently I heard someone actually contemplating doing this.

Many people use PA cabs as bass cabs, and lots of guys use "whatever" preamp through a PA type power amp. So yeah, a well-established idea that can work well for some people.

With a good bass-specific preamp, there is no reason PA speakers can't be used for your amp; however, unless you're willing to lug a 2x18 sub box and another mids/highs cab, you'd be better off with a good, bass-specific full-range cab. And I doubt there is a venue out there that would require a 2x18 sub box JUST for a bass amp
