Any Wet-Shavers Out There?

Hi Guys and Gals, (although this post probably pertains more to males than females)

Im going to be making my first foray into the world of wet shaving. I just ordered a Edwin Jagger DE89 with the lined barrel. For those of you who aren't familiar with wet shaving , it is a double edge saftey razor, which is the type of razor that came after the straight razor.

My fascination with safety razors began when I saw an old vintage gillette at an antique store, which I ended up purchasing. That was last week, and since then i've been doing a bunch of research and figuring out what wet shaving is all about.

I just think it is a cool way to shave, it seems like it will make the mundane task of shaving enjoyable (plus i think DE safety razors just look cool).

So I am just wondering is there any other wet shavers here on TB? What do you guys use? Could you recommend any soaps, creams, brushes, and/or blades? I purchased a beginner bowl and brush set, but at some point I would like to upgrade, there is a fair amount of stuff out there so I am not sure what is good and what is not.

I hope theres a few wet shavers out there!

I just use cheap disposable razors and foam from a can.

Went through a phase of using a straight razor, but the extra maintanence was too much for my lazy ass when I'm fine with a disposable. Never used one quite like what you have. Have an electric that barely gets used anymore because it just makes a mess of my face!

I use the same Edwin Jagger razor you do.

Check out the forum over at Badger and Blade; they are the shaving equivalent of Talk Bass. :)

I suggest buying a variety pack of blades so you can get an idea of what's out there. I use Derby or Feather blades.

I use the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin shaving cream, or just the regular canned stuff my wife uses.

I can understand where your coming from. Thats the only reservation I have. Just that it takes a little more time, and I am definitely a procrastinator! For instance I wait til' the last minute to shower and shave when I have to go to work or class. Thats why I'm gunna keep my cartridge razor around for those times when I need a quick shave!:smug:

@ Jasper: How do you like it? I will have to check that out thanks! Note: I haven't actually received my DE89, i ordered it last week so it should be here this week sometime!

I use Proraso shave cream, a badger shaving brush, and an expensive safety razor whose name I cannot think of. I get a great shave and the blades are dirt cheap. I would never go back. It takes a minute or two more, but it makes shaving into a ceremony of sorts.

Be warned, it takes a much lighter touch! If you try shaving with a safety razor like you use a multi-blade razor, you can remove some skin. A light touch and the right angle will get you a great shave!

I use a double edge razor. Looks to be a Merkur...

One thing to be aware of is that if it's adjustable, be careful with how far you have the guards opened when you use it. If I'm shaving a beard off that's grown for a season, I'll open it up to 2 on the dial, and deal with the consequences, but you really don't need a ton of exposed blade to get the job done.

Gillette Pivoting disposable 2-blade shavers and a can of Gillette Foamy for me. I tend to cut myself when I shave, so I make it a point to shave in the shower, which softens my beard and quickly heals any cuts I might get.

I've thought about shaving the old-fashioned way with a safety razor and soap in a cup and a badger brush, but I like living in the 21st Century too much to be using what is essentially 19th Century shaving tools and methods! But, to each his own!

Main razor is a Murkur Futur, its an awsome razor but can become a beast in a hurry...

Also have a 40's Super Speed, a travel tech and 2 quality straights but I rarely use them.

Best piece of advice, take it slow!!!

B&B is a great place for info, as well as "Mantic's"??? (forgot his name) youtube video's.

Sample pack's are great to find a blade that you like, but you'll soon realize Feather's just win.

You can pick up a cheap bowl/soap/boar brush combo at walmart/grocery store, then upgrade when you can afford too.

My personal favorite is Headslick for shaving cream, inexpensive, works great, and usualy available at walgreens. (But I also shave my head so it works perfectly)

Good luck, there's a little bit of a learning curve but easy to overcome.

I have sensitive skin too. What I find that helps is some vanishing cream (or noxema) applied to the face and neck. Let it sit until you feel the tingle. Wet a wash cloth with warm water and microwave it for 30 seconds. Place the hot towel on your face and neck - this opens the pours really well. Remove all cream and shave. Follow with a cool towel to close the pours. Works great for me ..

My wife loves the fact that I shave in the shower. I shave my head too so I can get a much closer shave that way. I just use my Fusion but considering the cost of blades I may have to check out the safety razors. Ever since I discovered shaving oil I won't use anything else. The best one I've found is from here:

Sustainable all natural shaving products. Good for the skin. Good for the wallet. Good for the Earth.

Great stuff and it actually lasts as long as they claim. Only takes a few drops and you can see where you are shaving since its clear.

I use a double-edged safety razor myself, along with Baxter's close shave formula and a lime & spices aftershave my girlfriend offered me.

It cleared all shaving irritation I previously had. Plus, it shaves closer and doesn't clog.

I've used a Gillette safety razor since I was old enough to shave. Same razor, given to me by my dad. I just turned 60. Shave while I'm showering. No other razor comes close, except maybe a straight razor.

Just found out its a Gillette "Fat Boy"...somehow appropriate, lol!
