Maybe you software wizards could unite and make a tutorial, like step by step on the whole thing, precisely to get abroad from AT and GT to more "pro" settings. Something like a list of requirements (both in terms of Software and Hardware).

I'm probably stating the obvious, but digital effects boxes are in essence just little specialized computers running software within anyway. Running effects on a PC or laptop gives you a nice big easy to use UI instead of squinting at a little LCD display.
Myself, I'm mostly using analog stomp boxes, but I use VST reverb and compression when recording/mixing.

This. I've been researching for about a month, trying to eliminate my amp altogether. If I could find a decent (read, GOOD sounding) alternative, I'd be all over it.
My house is becoming cluttered with my attempts!! I've got DI boxes, Irig and all the add-ons, three other iPhone sims, and anything else I can get my hands on.
If I could find a laptop solution, I'd buy it NOW.
