Anybody Else Studying Position Studies by Roger Filiberto?

I'm working on Electric Bass Position Studies by Roger Filiberto to improve reading standard notation.

It's a struggle because all that was learned in the open & 1st positions has to be somewhat "re-learned" from the 5th position on up.

Just wondering if anybody else was working on this & could share any tips...it's a bit of a workout in reading, no doubt.:bassist:

That is one great book. I cut my teeth on it some 25+years ago as a Jr. High School student with my teacher at the time. I now use that book with all my students when I'm teaching. It is a great book for getting out of first position and onto 5th, 7th, etc. I'd probably say that book was intrumental in my improvement on bass in those early stages.

I'm not quite sure I understand the question, but the book basically assumes you know first position (frets 1-4) and takes one through various reading exercises through 5th position (frets 5-8), 7th (7-10), 9th (9-12). Some of the exercises combine two postions. Each position study has several pages of etudes written for each position to read and work on. No tab in this book, which is a great thing.

sedgwick1489, I agree that it's a great book. I don't know where they got the songs/excercises for the position studies, but they're really catchy.

I've been playing "Long Walk in E flat" all weekend...the tune is actually stuck in my head.

MalcolmAmos, you'd probably enjoy the 1963 classic book, Electric Bass Method Vol. 1, also by Roger Filiberto. It goes straight into note reading (standard notation) in the open position, first position etc. Position studies is a 1975 supplement to Vol. 1 & 2.

I'm trying to learn to sight read music on my bass. That's the goal 'cuz I stink at it.

I'm not sure that I understand the "re-learned" part.

Just go slow and out of time if you are having a hard time identifying the notes and finding them on the fretboard. It's painful at first but very gradually gets easier.
