I used to be.

I didn't want a Fender, Squier, Gibson or Epiphone, as I regarded them to be the top names at the time. I also had a chance to try a Fender P once, and I just plain didn't like it. I didn't try a J, though. I felt that the top brands were for the top players, of which I didn't believe I was, despite being called "awesome" by many other local musicians.
When the chance came to buy something decent (tax refund time, YAY!) I went to the Yamaha store, and tried just about every 5 string in the place,as that was what I wanted, I ended up with a Samick, because I liked the sound, feel and colour, in that order.
Now, I would do the same thing, given the chance. I may not choose a low end bass, because my preferences have changed. I don't mind the Squier Bronco I'm using now, but it's not the best, and I know it. I'm still looking around for my own gear, and have an Epi TBird IV with amp on my watch list. I could grab the Behringer that's at my local second hand shop, but I hated the sound and feel. The only other thing they have , as of today, is a Red Fox. It's worse, IMO, than the Behringer, and is more $$ to boot.
OTOH, given free reign at my local Long and McQuade (Or even the other local music store) would probably net completely different results. I'd still try everything, then go with what sounded, felt and looked best to
ME.
Ya never know, I just might like a MIA P or J.
