I stopped watching TV years ago, and get my news from the internet. One of my better decisions in life.

If I spoke French I would watch Melissa thierau's show. That was my idea btw--remove grumpy old men news anchors; replace with beautiful women news anchors.

Local and city news... I get enough news to know what is going on in my city of residence ... And to cast an Informed vote on those things.

I get none of it from tv.

I can understand why some people feel that protest is futile but i have to disagree. who would be aware of green issues if it wasn't for Greenpeace and the few who took marginalisation and ridicule for years. The media pick up on undercurrents and bring it to the masses. The danger is that the media are always looking for 'the next thing' so issues can become passe and unfashionable too. I don't vote but I protest by not spending my money with companies that i consider unethical. If more of us did that then the dirty companies would soon sort themselves out. It's not always easy to find out who owns who but some companies are so obviously bad even a fool should be able to see through them. Gibson will never get my money nor will Tesco. It's no good complaining in ten years time when there are no shops other than Tesco and they have started to charge what they like if you go there now to save a couple of quid. Supermarkets have pretty much finished local garages in this country. The problem is most people don't see it coming or don't care or just feel that as perhaps no-one else cares then what's the point in bothering. If protest was as popular as apathy then perhaps we wouldn't be in this mess.

I don't watch the news much. I can generally get my weather and sports information from other sources. It's usually the same old stuff.

Electing Obama- all the hope and change got a man elected who was supposed to save our country. He did almost nothing of what he said he would, except get the troops out of Iraq. I, like everyone else who voted for him, actually believed the guy. Fools, all of us.

Believed what? "Change" This is all we heard and all people talked about. Nobody could answer what it was. If you've ever seen Idiocracy, it was along the same lines as "it has electrolytes!"

In terms of media characteristics, I agree with Chuck. TV is a lousy medium for details, but it's a great medium for emotional impact, for conveying concepts, and for showing action...so sports work great on TV. Radio is no better than TV for detailed content, as neither provide a way to go back and check information to help in retention.

For details, print and photography is better media - which also means that online text materials are good.

The Onion & Fox News are pretty damn funny. Once in a while I'll watch tv salespeople on those shopping channels. They're good. They will sell you 10 pounds of rotten pigtails if you listen long enough.
Anyone remember Morton Downey Jr? Interesting case. Apparently a complete douche on set but a calm friendly person to those who knew him. Obviously he was an entertainer.

I watch the news everyday, started about two years ago. Before then, I only watched sports news and read the newspaper for other news.

I'm sort of surprised at the amount of people who lack comprehension and decision making skills. It really isn't hard to watch a local or national news cast and be able to sift through the commentary to get to the facts.

Get it online, word-of-mouth, etc., and AVOID mass-media outlets while also reading foreign news sites. You'd be surprised at the level of censorship "normal" TV news gives.

Avoid any commercials or else(it's proven):

After the last election, I was very shocked with how much influence the news had over the "issues". I don't know what's worse, the fact that the media has so much influence or that the public bought it. :scowl: Just the facts ma'am.
