Anyone else trying to quit smoking in 2013?

I'm good - I had a couple cigarettes halfway, but basically smoke free for 3 months now. Quit on my birthday - gave myself a present.

After years of saying things like "I'll quit after my birthday.." Or "There are so many things coming up, I'll stop after that..." I just stopped.

Aside from the physical, it's mostly a mentality shift - and for me, respecting myself, and that I deserve to be healthy.

I have not had brown crap from my lungs
But......My Doctor said that just about every man who has erectile dysfunction is a smoker too. So, as a man in my 40s ..that is another motivator.... if you want a healthy sex life...

Yesterday was eight weeks since my last cigarette and I feel awesome.

I'm still coughing a bunch of brown crap out of my lungs every morning (anyone know how long that usually lasts?), but other than that things are awesome.

Eight weeks and you're still hacking things up? Do you still have problems coughing for seemingly no reason? When I quit after months of smoking (not just a couple cigarettes a month; 0.5-1.0 pack a day) I get what feels like a minor cold. It's just a runny nose and a general aching feeling. And hacking up lung butter never lasts more than two weeks.

How long had you been. Smoking for and how much? Are you still wheezing when you breathe deep? Is it always brown? I ask only because it sounds strange to me to be suffering lingering effects for so long. And of course the fail-safe advice is to see a doctor. But you could always wait it out another week or two. Eight weeks is just a long time. Congrats though!

I stepped down from cigarettes to cloves these past couple of weeks, and while I know that's not the solution, I am smoking much less than before. I'm considering stepping down to a vaporizer, but I know I should really just taper down to 1-2 cloves per day and then stop (so it's not so "cold turkey"). Those vaporizers are just kind of expensive. Enough of that. There's already a thread on vaporizers.

Good luck to all those who are still trying and congrats to all those who have managed to quit all together. I hope to join your ranks soon. I've made it a week here and there this year, but always go back.

I smoked 1-2 packs/day for 30 years and NEVER coughed up any brown stuff after I quit

If you have a recurring productive cough that has a color to it, I STRONGLY recommend a visit to your doctor

I went cold turkey in mid-December.

I smoked for ten years as a kid and quit (cold turkey) at age 25 or so. I was a non-smoker for almost 30 years, then moved to Asia, and started up again. I have to say I genuinely enjoyed it for a couple years. I even did an endorsement deal for Davidoff Cigars. But then I didn't enjoy it anymore. So I stopped after five years. Now I don't think about it anymore.

Haven´t smoked since mid February. Been smoking for the last 16 years. I had managed to cut from 20+ to 5-7 smokes a day a year ago, mainly because I was coughing brown crap every day. Cutting back did not chage that. One day I felt like not smoking, and didn´t that day. Then next day I started toying with the idea of quitting, and made a huge effort not to smoke, and didn´t. And the next day, and so on. For the past two months I have been craving for a smoke (you know, you get anxious and can´t think of anything else but smoking), but managed not to lite one up. Well, last week I realised that now, when getting anxiety attacks, it is not cigarrettes that I want, rather something sweet, like chocolate or some candy. And it is not that terrible anymore. I feel a weight has been lifted. And I still cough up some brown crap when I wake up, but very rarely now.

Huge props to my girl for putting up with me (male PMS 24/7).

I don´t know if going one day at a time makes it easier or not, it just happened naturally for me, I didn´t actually made up my mind about quitting, it just kinda happened. Anyway, everybody has their own way.

Cheers!

had a relapse for a couple of days. marriage problems
ugh!!!!!

S*** happens and what's important is how you deal with it. You got this.

I've been having a lot of cravings this week. Got a lot of stress because I'm graduating from college and I had a medical scare that landed me in the hospital earlier this week.

So far I've managed to resist. 75 days today.

Best of luck murphy.

Hey Guys, just wanted to say that I was a smoker for 23 years up until 1 month and 1 week ago. That's when I stumbled upon this thread and glanced over it , I noticed someone mentioned they quit by reading Alan Carr's book , East way to Stop Smoking. I figured what the hell, I'll give it a shot. And ever since I read it, I haven't smoked. So just wanted to say thanks to whoever posted about the book and that others should give it a try.
