Anyone else trying to quit smoking in 2013?

K, that's two now that trigger smoking cravings at movies. Is there truth to subliminal advertising? Seriously though, that is a kind of interesting trigger.

Interesting you say that. I quit smoking in April this year and it was all thanks to this book called Allen carrs easy way to quit smoking. My girlfriends brother recommended it to me and it has an insane success rate of 99% or some crazy **** like that. He mentions the collective hypnosis that media and society par takes in when it comes to smoking. The best part of the book is that you can smoke (in fact he tells you to) while reading it. I quit cold turkey at 2 AM the day i got the book and havent touched a cigarette since. I am sorry if I'm pushing this book but it was a life saver for me and if anyone else takes it seriously, it could be for them too! Pm me if anyone needs to know my experience with the book

I've heard about that book and even thought about buying it in the past. I think I'm going to. What about it was helpful for you?

It made me realise that smoking didn't do for me what i thought it did for me and that giving it up is actually a lot easier than I made it out to be. It also made me sensitive to societal hypnosis and how that played an important role in me making smoking a much bigger deal than it really is. For example you often see in movies that when someone is stressed out they'll be like "oh I need a cigarette!" That affirms to your subconscious that smoking actually relieves stress (especially if an actor you admire does it) where as it doesn't alleviate stress - all it does is reduce your craving for nicotine, which makes you feel better, so you thing that the cigarette helped - but the cigarette just solved the problem that it caused in the first place!
The book has subtle messages imbedded in it and it certainly hypnotises you in it's own way - but hey I'm open to good hypnosis. I don't want to ruin it for you so buy it and once you read it I'll tell you where I thought the messages lay.
One thing the book doesn't talk about is the disease caused by smoking - which is very interesting because we're so used to hearing about those.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to pick that book up in the next couple days. I'm not doing so good on my own this time and it definitely couldn't hurt.

I'm still struggling, folks. Off and on. Sometimes off for 3-4 days without much difficulty, just a problem staying off.

Today I'm breaking down and buying some patches. That's always helped in the past.

Yes....it is my quit smoking bible...
makes it so easy..........

Keeping off long term has been more a challenge to me

Me too. I can quit for a day. I can quit for a week. It's not that hard for me to do. What's really hard to do is quit for a month. I quit for five months back in 2011. A some point it did just become normal to not smoke. So there must be a threshold there where it becomes easier to stay quit. Several years back I'd quit for over five years...but started again.

Search for it...I forget what site it is, but you can get free patches sent to you...Here let me look. This is the one in LA county, but there are programs all over, and a national program I think. Invalid Link Removed

On another note, I had started to pick up my smoking...about 5-8 cigarettes a day...On my birthday of all days, I just said no more and quit cold turkey. I'm going on day 17 and hanging on fine.

I find that I most want a cigarette when I'm angry or just had a fight with my wife. That is my main trigger. The anger in me just wants to say, "F it."
