Anyone ever had a bass off at a show?

I personally find it a lot more to let off a line, and let someone basically build off of it, change it, and then let them see what you do with it.

A build-off i guess.

Never had a bass off, but then again, i really don't know too many around here that can play anything other than Sunshine of Your Love and Another One Bites the Dust.

Honestly, any time someone decides, "oh, and here's where you get a bass solo" my response is always "no, if I haven't shown my ability thusfar in the night by my normal playing then it's to late for the crowd to suddenly grow ears".

If I wanted to be a solo'ist I'd be playing a guitar, not a bass.

my band is good friends with, and constantly plays shows with another band, and me and the bassist are good friends, and at the end of every show we do with them, we have a monster jam (at the upcoming show we're thinking squib cakes), during that jam we usually have a few chorus' of trading fours. I like trading with him cause he plays way differently than i do so it gives me a chance to hear something else and respond to it with the bass.

All the bassists I have met have been very friendly and inclusive. So no bass-offs.

And if somebody wanted a bass-off, I would probably just say "You win" and walk away. I have no pretensions of being a great bassist.

oh come on you guys... it's one thing to have a serious teenage competitive 'loser-feels-ashamed' 'bass off', which is admitedly very childish and silly, but surely you'd enjoy getting up there and trading 'licks' with another bass player... each building on each other's phrases and trying to push each other further and further...?

i've done this many times with other bass players and guitarists at jams, and it's a lot of fun... and it's great for your ear (if you're not just tossing off pre-rehearsed phrases)

so, yes, I would definitely have a 'bass off'... it's not serious brow-furrowed music creation but it can be fun and a good workout...

I would get up and have a 'bass off' with any bass player, regardless of whether I thought they were better than me or not... I speak with my own bass voice, no more, no less, so there's nothing to win or lose... we're up there to have a fun musical conversation

lighten up!!! it's called 'playing' music... so I think playfulness is worth considering...

I don't quite have a bass off at GC, I have a "volume on" war every time I am at GC! I like plugging into the biggest rig they have at the store and cranking it past the guitard's and every other terrible bassist who walks in there and plays freaking Blink 182 or slaps incoherently.

And what is up with slap bass being AUTOMATICALLY better than finger style? Most slappers couldn't hold a groove if the groove was covered with crazy glue.

No bass off's for me - If I did do one and the other guy slapped, I would probably lose, but I think I could beat him out if I cranked my distortion pedal up, cranked my 410, 212 and 18 all the way up and just obliterated him with volume and nasty, crunchy, fuzz tones and some heavy finger action to boot. That way, the crowd would crown me the winner as fast as they could just so I would shut up!

You have the right Idea, thats exactly why it pissed me off so much at first, but then i started having a lot of fun with it when i realized that we both have very different styles, so realistically, there couldn't have ever been a winner due to our uniqueness.
