Ah, the Roland JC120 - those were great amps! I did a 1982 tour with a "Name Band," during which those amps showed up in all sorts of ways and functions at rehearsals and on stage…including keyboard use. A genuine classic.

Ah, the Roland JC120 - those were great amps! I did a 1982 tour with a "Name Band," during which those amps showed up in all sorts of ways and functions at rehearsals and on stage…including keyboard use. A genuine classic.
Ive had mine since 89, Love it, really a versatile amp. My brother plays with one in his guitar set up (dual amps) has a 1960 marshal for the dirty side and the JC120 for the clean side. Hell, Ive recorded bass through mine (at low level), sounded great.
I was at a bar with friends and one of their bro-friends overheard me telling someone about the heavy metal 3 piece I'm (very slowly) building.
He jumped right in with suggestions like:
"you're gonna need at least two guitarists and a keyboardists to make it happen, bro'
I asked him if he actually listened to heavy metal and he quoted Foreigner or something.
I would have kicked him in the nuts for his ignorance, but it made me too sad just knowing he existed as a human being, he shoulda been born a turnip.

I've never been in a band that has a regular keyboard player--the goal was always that one of the other members could take over keyboard if the song needed it.
There was one time when I took lessons that we had a thrown together band for a festival, with a keyboard player in it--but her timing was horrible--and after everybody else ended together, she was still playing.

No, it isn't. Not as an accusation, just a question from a bassist to a keyboardist; what's so damn hard about not playing what doesn't need to be played?

That bloody bastard told me turn down because "bass is something that should support from the background. You have to leave way more room for the real instruments"
I told him that he is out of the band with immediate effect. That felt awesome. Should have done that much earlier. But better late than never! He ruined our band sound in every possible way and tried to transform us to some sort of wannabe-dream-theater
Key players should stay the shag out of hard rock, unless you are a master on the hammond organ and have detailed knowledge of how to use a leslie cabinet

Not hating on you.. that's just what came to my mind when I saw this thread. I saw a video of a guy punching his band's guitarist at a show for being terrible... and found that funny.. but that guy is still alive I'm sure.

I have no issues with keyboard players. On the other hand, I can't stand pianists who play keyboards...
Mostly I have played with keyboard players, who understand the role and the function of the instrument, but occasionally I've played with pianist who are all over the place, clogging up the arrangement... they don't last long.

I posted a thread a while back complaining about my overplaying, Low end key bashing keyboardist. I tried to speak to him in a round about way. I like the guy and didn't want to cause a confrontation. He is a very good keyboardist and it is clear he spent all of his time in his bedroom hammering out tunes "while covering all basses" Including BASS. It took me a while but I finally purchased a decent HD audio video recorder. You can see where this is going can't you. I took some footage at practice where it was not as noticeable as he was not playing through his huge Roland amp. But when I recorded part of one of our gigs it was in his face!! He uses 3 keyboard and his volumes are not matched and he "OVER PLAYS EVERYWHERE". Next practice I revealed the evidence. We do a cover of Twilight Zone, and the part where I come in with the cool in your face bass riff, "Bass and Drums only" He was covering my part with some Quacky sounding bass synth part. The video clearly shows me "GLARING" at him from my side of the stage, and it sounded hideous at that!! Needless to say he is getting better at staying on his parts which he has many. We give him solo parts with the guitar player also. He just needed to understand that he didn't need to be playing all the time, and that it wasn't cool. IT WAS ANNOYING".
I guess its a little different, but I always get stares from my band if I don't play until the chorus of "All right now" by Free. Same thing with "Pour some sugar". I guess it's ok that the guitarist doubles every solo bass section when he's supposed to drop out though. That is a HUGE pet peeve of mine...
I'm with Harry. I've had keys in just about every band I've been in. One band now has two one on a Nord and one on a Motif and this "Left Hand" has never once been brought up. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. It doesn't happen to me though. If you'd like click the link to the band below and check out the songs.

Exactly this. We used to do Radar Love, and he would always do this on top of the "Bass and drums only" parts (which kinda sorta make that song) and in practice I would just stop playing and look at him, and tell him he has to wait at least two measures before coming in, and he had to be reminded again every time we played that song.
Well, I feel your pain. I generally try to TRANSFER my pain...
to the keytard.
Now don't get me wrong, over the years, I HAVE played with exactly 2 keyboard players
that were NOT keytards.
These ARE the exception to the rule,
but the rule itself is NOT without merit.
It's cool, you're not supposed to. Andy Fraser never did.
I know...try telling that to the guy that also doubles the solo bass parts to "I'm your captain."
I found out the other day that kbd player who walked all over my bass parts (and both the male and female singers lines) and complained that I was too loud if he could hear my bass at all, is getting the old band back together with him as BL.
He is married to the female singer and has the old drummer back (who refuses to learn any new material). He didn't ask me to be the bass player which is a good job because I would have refused.
I am getting too old for all that crap and am enjoying my current band far too much to get involved with Phil Allspace again.
