I'm assuming you have the Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection and am also assuming the injectors are the same, still unserviced since 1983.

After all this time, it's almost certain that some or all of them are at least partly clogged. This will wreak havoc with the turbo engine and will cause exactly the misfiring problems you're experiencing. Getting the injectors serviced after so many years is really a necessity rather than an option.

One other thing to check is the electrical grounds for the injectors. Each injector should be grounded to the rear of the valve cover to a single bolt (1 bolt per cylinder bank, 3 wires per bolt) via a black colored wire. Remove the bolts and clean them of any corosion and check the wire terminals for solid conection. Replace the bolts and tighten them carefully. If not tight enough, they won't provide a good ground. If too tjght, they'll strip out the aluminum in the valve cover.
 
That 190SL is one of the most beautiful cars that Mercedes eer made. I have always loved those!

And yet, 105-115 PSI isn't super, but at 126K miles on a 33-year old engine, not bad either. All I did was pull the spark plugs, screw n the compression gauge and crank the engine over 10 revolutions per cylinder. Throttle was closed.

I can check fuel pressure, it is worth at least checking off that item.

Throttle should be open for the test.

Probably, but I'm not testing how good the compression is, I'm only testing to be sure I don't have a bent valve that's not closing fully. I got that info from the even pressures in the first test.

If it was mine I would redo the compression test with the throttle open, as it should be. If you still have low numbers it could be an indication of valve timing being off.
 
Throttle plate propped open in the MAF? Not sure exactly what that means on a car with a mass Air Flow sensor.

Push the gas pedal all the way to the floor so the throttle is all the way open. You're looking for the engine's ability to ingest and compress air during a compression test.

Easy enough, and thanks. I'll do it just to see if the results are any less even.

Part of the joy of an older straight-six like the Datsun 240-260-280 series is that the spark plugs are completely exposed on the passenger side of the engine. It's easy to reach in, remove the plug wires (twist the boot, never pull on the wire) and remove the plugs. It's less than a 15-minute job. A compression test (completed with plugs back in and ready to go) can be done in 30 minutes.

That's barely enough time for my beer to get warm.
 
I have a new clue to look at. The distributor is driven by the oil pump which is external to the pan and driven directly by gears on the crankshaft; it only mounts correctly or 180 degrees out, so the position of the oil pump gear matters. I didn't re-time the gear on the oil pump when I installed it and so it's entirely possible the timing is off. Viewed from the top with a timing light, the engine appears to have too much advance, which could certainly result in bad running. Moving the distributor within the available travel makes it worse by adding advance, so that's another clue.

I'm thinking I may very well be one tooth off on the oil pump gear. Fortunately it's four bolts to access and drop it enough to change the gear alignment. (And a couple of bolts to release the front sway bar for access, but that's trivial.)

And BTW - this is part of what you get into with older cars - deducing problems by tapping a wider knowledge base. Forums are great for this...and the idea above came from a Datsun Z-car forum.

Engine: 460, comp cams, edelbrock intake, edelbrock 750 carb, and lots more. Gets 8-10 mpg if I drive the speed limit and do not get on it. Gets much less the way I drive it.
Looks great. I really like old trucks. Here is one that would be fun to have.
