This morning I've noticed a bunch of emails from various sites offering deals that are normally reserved for big holidays. Not just music gear, pretty much everyone.

We may be facing 20% unemployment and a much higher cost of living. Full time musicians will have no income and there will be no places hiring bands to have live music. The bars and restaurants are being hard hit and once they get the OK to have live music, they may not be able to afford bands as the restaurants have lost money. The prices of high end instruments will take massive hits, cheaper stuff a bit less. There will be desperate souls trying to sell their toys and they should go very, very cheap. Unless you are quite rich, keep your money for living expenses and emergencies. You have to be very foolish to buy musical instruments right now when you should be concerned about your survival. Your employer could go out of business as well and your job could end. Hate to say this but it can be reality. Years back I sold campers then we got high unemployment Some people were selling them for half their value and some others were selling their houses to live in their campers. This is going to be bad so be smart and don't buy unnecessary stuff, please.

Thanks for giving us hope. I was kinda hoping for price increases as I need to sell about a dozen and a 1/2 guitars and basses along with lots of other gear before I move in 4 months. Sucks to be me. Well, looks like it sucks to be anyone in a COVID19 country - or that relies on one for supply chain.

Any company even close to going under won't survive this IMO. Guitar Center, GameStop, mall stores, etc.

Macy's just announced, closing all stores through March 31, and promoting online deals.

You would have to be crazy to touch a guitar at guitar center. I would assume it is covered in caronavirus.

If you're hoping an instrument might come up cheaper, that you can flash at forthcoming gigs (reminds me of the less-bright Crusaders who bought knockdown price armour from richer knights too heatstroked to wear it any longer), the portents from Europe are not good. Bars, restaurants, theatres all closed until further notice. Even my laundry guy - a place I am still legally allowed to visit - is doing the last runs of sheets and tablecloths and doesn't know what orders will pay his rent in the next weeks.

OTOH, if you hope to nail a player down who's selling off to pay the bills, could be good times. I also noticed this outfit for sale:

I don't want to sound all moral, but the entertainment/leisure biz that we all gain from to varying extents looks absolutely dire this close to the new epicentre.

The way the Canadian Dollar has been tanking over the past few weeks in response to the market situation, all US, Euro, GBP, etc prices have skyrocketed. I hope this all clears up sooner than later, so we can get back to dreaming about instruments that may possibly be in my grasp.

I think GC is already on it's way out. Recently it took three salespeople almost a half hour to place an order for an $11. music stand. Their problems preceded the pandemic. I was told that they're now owned by a cosmetic company.

IMO, prices on used gear may come down for some items, but not for others. I do think the supply of good guitars/basses/amps is going to diminish because everyone is so freaked out by coronavirus and the economy that they have less time to devote to buying and selling. At least that’s my entirely anecdotal observation.

I am seeing a marked upswing in "mid to high end" instruments in the (eBay Germany) want ads. Most are priced in the upper end of their ranges.

But!

I expect those prices to go down significantly as weeks of no gigs take their toll on the weekend warriors who aren't working during the week anymore.

One aspect to consider...

Guitar Center has closed down all stores in PA and there's no doubt in my mind that the same will happen in many other states. There goes that 50-60% offer that you could always count on if you were in a pinch for whatever reason. Pawn shops aren't going to stay open much longer IMO.

So where does one go when they need cash for their instrument *now* ?
