Anyone rockin an 18?

I've been using my AudioKinesis ThunderChild 118 for a couple of years now. It's an amazing cab overall.

As is commonly stated though, the size of the driver basically only tells you the size of the driver, not how it will sound.

Here's my rig that I use:

Though I no longer have the Combustion - I now play two different Afterburner 1's, with a third one on order.

They have a huge disadvantage - lack of higher frequencies.
This guy, the Electro-Voice EVM-18B ProLine, does 40 to 6000 Hz on-axis, and probably performs better than some/many 15-inchers and (square-arranged, as nearly all are) 410s even off-axis:

I'll readily concede it's just the exception that disproves the rule, and that the engineer(s) that designed it must have done an awful lot of tradeoff-juggling. And that this is pretty much it for big bright woofers - I don't expect to find anything remotely like it among 21" drivers or larger...

I've used a few 18's over the years with vastly different performance characteristics. I found myself using a JBL E155 for a while because it was cheap and came in a Mesa RR bass cabinet. It went subwoofer deep and handled a 300w tube amp with grace. It was every bit as capable as the 410's I've used over the years but the tradeoff was top end performance and weight. It was huge and heavy and needed heavy treble boost to cut through a mix. Since then I put the JBL in an old Ampeg/Peavey/???? cabinet I found on craigslist. It had significantly less volume than the Mesa and was not tuned well for the speaker to maximize its low end performance. But it was 50 lbs lighter than the Mesa, fit in my Accord's trunk, and was still loud as hell with 300 watts.

The next 18 I used was in a Thunderchild 118 built by MAS. My model is somewhat different than current production cabs but weighed 100 lbs less than its Mesa/JBL counterpart. This cabinet was so clean and clear that I found myself wanting a more colored cabinet for most of my musical ventures. I once again need a clean "big rig" so it'll be coming out of its early retirement soon. It is nothing like your typical perception of an 18" cab in terms of sound, weight, and size.

The final 18 was found in a B18N. It is an AlNiCo speaker with a wooly, warm character like most would expect from an 18. It is not really any louder than its B15N equivalent in any regard. It is just bigger, heavier, and has a slightly different (but equally awesome) character.

In summary, 18's are just another means to the same end: amplifying your instrument. They vary just as much as any other size speaker in terms of weight, performance, and voicing. You just need to find what works for you.

Yeah I would like to try one of those TC118 cabs. I have that same woofer and am debating whether to have a cab built around it. I guess the only way to know if I'll like it is to just do it!

TBer @4StringTheorist has a TC112 near you. Having personally demo'd the two side by side, I can tell you that the 112 and 118 are voiced very similarly... the main difference being that the 118 seemed (slightly) louder when all else was equalized.

Here's a "registry" of sorts that I setup for AK users, so we can keep track of who is where for things like this :P

I don't think there are too many TC118s out in the wild at all.

The answer is yes. It is an awesome woofer. I bought mine off Duke's son to put into an old Kustom 118B W bin. It had no breathing room in there and I remembered that Duke mentioned considering using it for a big brother TC cab but did not think there was a market for such a beast. I then asked Mike Arnopol to build me a TC that fits under an SVT. He did just that and the first (non-standard) TC118 was born. If clean isn't your flavor that woofer would be killer in one of his more aggressive Hathor cabs.

Had and used 1x18 on each side of the stage in the roadie days of the 70's along with an SVT with 2 8x10's.
Got this rig on the cheap for any "I REALLY don't trust the soundman" gigs since I've had a few. Bugera bi-amp head was got for $212 delivered one December when Amazon glitched the down(thread here pointed it out). Works quite well and doesn't seem to take half of a venue to produce results like the folded 18's did.

Crossover is run between 160Hz and 180Hz.

A buddy of mine used to have a Carvin 18. He bought it as a set with a 4x10 and a ridiculously underpowered amp for what he wanted to do. I think the amp was 150W/150W biamped.
He gigged with the head and 4x10 for years but the 18 never left his gear storage room. It was too big to fit any car he ever owned.
Sold it for next to nothing when he retired from playing.

I plugged it in a few times over the years. Had an interesting sound. Muddy by modern standards, but probably would have been amazing for reggae. I knocked some stuff off a shelf once using it with a 5 string and a 500W amp. That was fun.

If the DFW get together happens, my Audiokinesis TC112 is coming along.

I have a Sonic with a EV 18B andit has pretty good highs. It's just too boxy of a box to bother with. It's been in storage for 12 years.
Cool, someone with real-world experience with it! It does model shy in the lows in a small box and/or when sealed. OTOH it could do bona fide subwoofer-grade lows in a huge enclosure...but then the mechanical power handling would plummet. Basically it could go from making a great, gig-worthy baritone guitar speaker in a box only large enough for the driver, to an awesome sub-contra practice cab (powered with a suitably small amp) in a big box. Everything in between should be carefully balanced between gig volume requirements and limits of the driver - using a pair would be safer I suppose. It's not light of course - almost exactly 10 kilos - but could be worse.

Acoustic Control Corp 301 works great for me. Running 2 on the 1ohm stable 370 dinosaur will definitely be heard

Is the net gain of two coupled side by side as big as Im led to believe? I only recently got one (301 that is) looking for another.

Might be a dumb ass question but here goes..how about a 301 beside a B36a (I have one of those)? Looking for a suitable spot to try this out!
