Anyone using delay pedals?

I'm a huge delay nut. Currently I'm running a board seven delay(esque) pedals in series. I enjoy noise and psychedelic explorations.

One thing I love about delay-based effects is that you can create all kinds of sounds that deviate severely from traditional bass sounds. Since I only use bass, drum machines, vocals and effects to construct all my songs being able to create sounds outside the typical "bass range" is instrumental. For now delay type effects are how I do it. Throw on a looper or two and it's a whole universe of sounds at my fingertips.

I've also made songs entirely around certain delays. I have a whole song that's just using the Dreadbox Raindrops to create all the noises for example. I don't find I'm able to exercise that kind of creativity with any other effect.

Totally. I was jamming with my son the other night and decided to really crank up the setting on my Keeley Gold Star. What followed was a five minute exploration into wonky metal bass riffs that left my son asking me to turn the pedal off. Oh yeah!

Just looked up the Gold Star and it seems super neat, but couldn't find any bass vids! The compressor/ducking settings seem like it would have really interesting sounds for us bassists

It’s a subtle effect. That’s what makes it work well for bass. You don’t get the wispy trails and echoes like on the Canyons but you do get some nice dirt and weird sounds at the right settings. Perhaps I’ll post some examples for y’all.

I'd like to be able to achieve the effect heard in the link below. Every delay pedal is demoes towards guitars, so I can't find any demos that help me find this particular dramatic, but limited effect.



Looking at Sweetwater, ironically, the cheaper pedals seemed like they might be best.

I'm not a huge Berringer fan and I'm always a little worried about relatively super gear. But this seemed like it might get me there. But this would be a one trick pony, which I'm not a big fan of.


Dunlop EP103 Echoplex Delay Pedal
The Dunlop also felt like maybe it can go where I want, and I like the possibility of using some of the dirt settings. I just couldn't find a demo that made the sale for me.

I couldn't possibly go through every one of their demos - especially after the consistent lack of good ones, but these two seemed like candidates.

Any feedback on these or perhaps a pedal that I haven't mentioned to get me there?

I certainly don't need a looper - I have a good one of those that I already can't use!

I’m a delay fanatic but that sounds like a reverb to me. No modulation, pretty extreme pre delay setting. Pedals like the strymon cloudburst, blue sky, and big sky can pull that sound off. You need a pre delay control that can get pretty extreme. Lot of reverb pedals have no pre delay control or just a toggle switch with two pretty similar options. Nether of which will be that extreme. So start by looking for reverb pedals with a pre delay knob.

delay is probably my favorite effect but admittedly, I rarely use them as a traditional delay. More often I use delay for chorus, flanger, reinforcing my solo tone, ambient swells, or sound effects. But yeah I think for the chorus and flanger effects alone if bass players were more aware that a lot of delay pedals can produce those sounds they’d sell their chorus and flanger and get a delay.

Digital delays also allow you to really dial in specific timings. Great for making dance or ambient tracks.

I’m a huge fan of modulated delay or reverb or using it as an effect… trying to use reverb or delay live as a subtle thing just throws me off or makes me want to dig in harder.
At the moment I use a walrus audio slo set to fully wet with a long decay to get creepy soft tones for intro stuff. I then smear that with the afterneath to make it a bit more musical. I’ve only recently got the afterneath so need to play with it more as it seems there’s a lot to get out of it if your patient and dial things in…
Only other reverb / delay I like was the boss rv3 in the reverb and delay setting… it’s a short delay with a plate reverb that just does that space ambient thing so well but I sold that on ages ago.

It's not the latest and greatest, but I've been using an EQD Avalanche Run for years now. Reverb and delay in one box.

Earthquaker Dispatch Maker is also delay and reverb in one pedal. Does a good job.
