AR15 Questions

Well I'm looking to buy an AR15 (complete or lower + upper) in the next couple months here and would really like to find something for less than $700.

What good brands are out there that I would be able to make a complete rifle for $700? I'd like to get a chrome-lined barrel and please suggest any other options that I should get that will make it accurate/durable... It's mainly going to be used for target shooting, I plan on getting a scope for it eventually so I'd like a fairly accurate one. I'll be upgrading to a collapsible stock, 4-rail, vertical front grip, and new pistol grip pretty soon after buying. Not sure if a free-floating barrel is in my price range right now.

Also whats the difference between an A1 and A2?

A lot of guys at AR-15.com have had good things to say about the guns and the CMMG's service as well. Add 20 bucks for them to handpick one that looks the least dinged and 15 bucks for shipping. The only other charge that you might have depending on who you know is the cost of having it shipped to your local licensed dealer and having them do the legal transfer.

I'm planning on buying an AR after I sell a couple of other firearms and I'm probably just going to look around for a good used one.

AR15.com has more info than you can read at once.

If you stick with any of the brands listed, Bushmaster, DPMS ,etc you can one for a little less and add options later.

I ended up getting a DPMS lo pro classic, and modding lightly (I live in MA, so I have some very bizarre rules I have to follow. It's sort of like having a baker teach you how to play bass, or heart surgeon teach you to fly a plane etc.) You should check and make sure your state does not impose any weird restrictions on anything.

Dang, DigMe, you beat me to it!

I wish they'd sell out so I don't have the temptation to pick one up. I've heard of some of the guys getting ones where the blemish was an off-color spot on the inside of the lower!

Another thing, if you don't want those CMMG blems, watch the Equipment Exchange and you can get great deals there.

Great thread, I was going to post some AR15 questions myself today. I have a Bushmaster (20") and love it but I want to get a 16". I am not going to build one, my handyman skills are negligible. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the gas piston AR's? The S & W MP is going for 999 at Sportsman's, and I might be able to get a discount on that. How do they compare to the others, the Bushmaster in a gas piston model is far higher (around 1600$). I've heard the piston models are far more reliable. OTOH my Bushmaster has been FTF free, once I got good mags.

Sounds like you're trying to fix a problem you don't have! :D

I think it's against man law to talk someone out of buying a rifle. If you want a gas piston, go for it. However, I don't think that the military and so many police departments, etc. would use the AR platform if it weren't reliable.

If you want to spend some extra money, check THIS out!

Also, although you say you don't want to build one, don't overlook the possibility of buying a complete lower and complete upper separately and snapping them together. That way you're not paying for the manufacturer's 11% excise tax for a completed firearm.

If this is going to be a target shooting rifle, why not spend the money that you're planning on spending for those tacti-cool upgrades on a better AR? You won't need a vertical foregrip or rail system on a target rifle, so sink that money into a sub-MOA rifle.


Just a thought...

Mr. Armueller, Come to the West Frankfort, Il. IPSC matches 1st Sun. of the month. You can talk to people who use and train with AR's constantly. You can get an idea of what works and what doesn't. Plus there's usually somebody there with something for sale.
If you want to go new, "More Guns" in MT. Vernon, Il. is about the best selection and prices in your area.

Crazy! I think Armueller is my brother from a different mother. I've been all boned up about AR's recently too. Thanks for posting that Bargain Bin website, Senior Cook.

My problem is that as a lefty, I'm a little limited on options. I wanted to build one myself, but Stag is the only company I've seen that sells lefty uppers but they don't do lefty lowers...not really sure why. I'm leaning torwards a 16" barrel with an A4 upper.

I tend to agree with this. All the quadrail/vert forgrip/laser/blah blah blah stuff is neat-o, but I think it's probably a little over kill. I'd say get a stripped down model, take it to the range and see if there is anything that you feel like you're missing.

Those lo pros look pretty awesome and they're right around his price range too. Those are sans-rear sights, right? What did you end up putting on yours for sights or optics?

I will tomorrow. I just took delivery of my GTS Custom Operator midlength upper today, and my VLTOR Clubfoot stock is due to arrive tomorrow, at which point it will be complete... except maybe a more ergonomic grip.

Hey, my wife was in FL for two weeks visiting her parents and comes home Friday... it's easier on me when she doesn't see the big brown truck stopping every day.

I bought it stripped and installed the lower parts kit myself. I was toying with the idea of building an upper from scratch, but there's some specialty tools you need and I decided not to mess with it. Forgot to pick up the carbine stock wrench with my other orders, so I got one from AIM Surplus along with some C-Products mags for $9.95 each, since they were on sale. It's coming tomorrow too.
