AR15 Questions

I bought it stripped and installed the lower parts kit myself.

Was that considerably cheaper?

Maybe $20 cheaper or so. I don't mind doing it though. That's with no stock assembly. I didn't want to get an M4 or A2 style stock on it that I'd just take off and replace anyways.

I tend to agree with this. All the quadrail/vert forgrip/laser/blah blah blah stuff is neat-o, but I think it's probably a little over kill. I'd say get a stripped down model, take it to the range and see if there is anything that you feel like you're missing.

I do agree to a point. But I must admit I bought my AR with one consideration that if the S hits the fan, I'm prepared. I remember the LA riots (it wasn't that long ago) and those Korean storekeepers didn't have any trouble sitting on their porches with their AR's. I do live with in a couple of miles of Detroit

I bought a 20" and now wish I bought the 16" M4, instant target acquisition in an urban environment and all. I've got a Trijicon 3X ACOG and a Surefire weapons light on it, but I don't feel the need for any more toys on it. I'm still debating wether to keep the 20" and put a regular scope on it and use it for target and Coyotes, and switch the tactical stuff to the 16" or just trade it. They are great plinking guns and a blast at the range. The stock Bushmaster is very accurate, the Camp Perry boys get 3" groups at 500 meters with open sites! I'm good for 1 1/2" of the bench with a scope at 200 meters.

I'd really like to get a conversion to 6.5mm Grendel but those are pretty expensive aren't they?

EDIT - or a .50 BMG conversion... oh wow... looks like it runs about $1000 for just the upper... LOL ammo is about $4 each round.

You need a new lower for the .50 (for the 7.62 also). The rounds won't make it through the mag well on the lower...

Actually, the mag fed .50 uppers have the magazine going out to the side. Some people fill an old AR magazine with lead and put it into the original magwell to help reduce recoil.

The vast majority, though, are single shots.

Standard AR lowers work for them all, though.

Woooooohoooooooooo! Purdy! I don't know how to tell the difference in barrels. Is that an HBar or an M4 barrel? From what I understand a standard HBAR doesn't neck down from the reciever to the muzzle the way an M4 barrel does...correct?

It's not an M4, an M4 has the cutout for the grenade/flare launcher attachment:

It's not really an HBAR, either. It's a truly custom profile barrel made exclusively by Global Tactical.

Well, I buckeled this morning and picked up this DPMS Lite 16" with fixed A1 upper.

I paid $800 flat and got the rifle, sling, hard case, couple of mags, cleaning kit, and they installed an ambi safety. Pretty excited to get it out on the range! Hopefully this weekend.

My only downcheck on this AR is that it doesn't have the A2 sights.

Otherwise it's good to go as a fun gun
