Well, all my stuff came today and I just finished my Cav Arms/Armalite build. I don't have a BUIS either; I don't know which one I'm going with yet. I'll get a pic later.

I've not read anything bad about them and their pricing is decent. All the ar15.com nuts seem to love 'em. Anyone here own some or have any experience with 'em?

I've thought about them, but my main mag pouch wouldn't fit them very well and I was fairly quick without them, although it's been a really long time since I've fired a round. The mags I use also drop free.
The EO Tech and Aimpoint are both around 350$ new. If you hunt you should be able to find on one of the boards or Ebay. I got my ACOG on the bay for 400$ Another one you might look for is the Trijicon Reflex. I've seen a few of them used. The Trijicons, don't require batteries, they use fiber optics in the daylight and a nuclear element (tritium) for low light. It's interesting that the state department doesn't allow you to import them to many countries, so don't take it to Iran.

I've been doing a lot of research lately and think I'll probably get an EoTech, but it's going to be a couple of months.
I've only run two mags worth through mine but I like it. Very solid feel and I really like the feel of loading ammo into the follower.

The EO tech is a great choice. I was in Police Supply for a couple of years and it was the go to sight for LE and AR 15's. The only reason I jumped on the ACOG was the price was right, and it's hard to argue with the standard issue special forces sight. In fact the Army just bought them as standard issue. If you get the EO Tech be sure you buy the one that runs on AA batteries.

Sorry I suppose if I had been paying attention I could have just pm'd ya. I finally shot the new toy on New Years Day and I really don't care too much for the freebie metal mag that I got with it. It was a pain in the butt to load and just feels kind of crappy. I'll probably go with a non-windowed PMAG...or 10. Out of all the composite mags those seem to stress test the best. Plus a couple of buddies already bags on me for my 'plastic' guns - Glock XD and now the AR - it would only make sense that my mags matched.
My friend and I didn't get a chance to get to the 100 yard range, but just plinking and blowing the dust off it at the 50 yard range non-benched the AR shot fantastic. I roasted through a couple hundred rounds and quickly realized that this is my new favorite gun. I can see that a new financial black hole has just opened up.
I purchased a crappy red dot for it on Christmas Eve along with that rail mount for the carry handle. However, I decided to not even bother with putting it on because it just seemed like a waste of money so I'm taking it back tomorrow. A buddy of mine felt sorry for me and gave me that Bushnell (a slight step up). I literally just slapped it on earlier tonight for the picture after I cleaned it. Now I gotta go get it dirty again to sight in the dot...oh darn.

Is there any benefit to buying a 20" barrel vs. a 16? I'm looking to eventually put a scope and possibly a bipod on whatever I get and make it a long range rifle. What features should I look for in a base model to achieve this end result as economically as possible?
I'd like to have a pretty reputable brand and a lifetime warranty if they offer it for AR's

That is a flat top under the carry handle.
The advantage to a longer barrel is increased velocity. Long range target shooting, well, people used to think that if you had a longer barrel, it was more accurate at longer ranges. They're finding that shorter barrels are more stout and less subject to barrel whip, increasing accuracy. If you're using iron sights, the increased sight radius from front to rear sight makes a longer barrel more accurate just because of that, but a single-plane sight like a scope or EOTECH removes that variable from the equation.
Another benefit to the longer barrel is that it has the standard rifle-length gas system, which is what Mr. Stoner designed it for. The timing is exactly right. A midlength gas system is next best, followed by the carbine gas system. All of them are completely reliable and acceptable, though... we're splitting hairs here.
If you want an accurate long range rifle, it's well-worth it to spend some money on a good barrel.

The .223 is more of a speed based round. The usual 55 grain weight and 5.45mm diameter can often leave too clean of a wound. With a 16" barrel, you tend to gain about 200fps per extra inch and lose about 200fps for every inch you cut down. You can cut the barrel to less than 16" if you have something permanently pinned to make the barrel 16" total length. You end up with more recoil, a bigger flash, louder blast, severely decreased muzzle velocity, and impaired cycling. With good ammo and clips, my 16" barrel behaves very nicely.
