Are old unused strings good for use?

If they are used strings, just recycle them. If they are new and still in the original packaging, then just wipe them down really well with either denatured alcohol, or 91% Isopropyl. Then you are good to go.

Opps! Your headline did say unused as in new. I'd still wipe 'em down good.

When I go back to my old neighborhood I keep one in my pocket for protection. An awesome weapon to have but you didn't hear this from me.
 
I put these on my Epiphone Thunderbird Pro IV in April. Supposedly they'd been sitting in the store for years and years and years.
Card inside the pack said NJ sales tax 5%!
