Now, P Basses only got 1 pickup while J basses got 2, that makes J Basses 100% better than P Basses.
Or so you would think.
The twist however is that the P pickup got 2 coils while a J pickup only got 1 making the P pickup 100% better than a J pickup.
Or so you would think.
Cause here comes another twist, the two coils in the P pickup only cover half a pickup each, in reality only making it 50% better than a J pickup.
This all however adds up to the J Bass actually still being 50% better than a P Bass.
You can't argue with mathematical facts!
So the scientifically correct answer to your question is no.
Personally I prefer a P/J Bass which is 50% better than both a J and a P Bass!

Ahh, but the bridge pickup on a J has negative value as it only makes the tone worse => P with its superior, correctly placed, pickup wins again.
=> P > J
ime i need to kind of do a custom jazz to get what i want, however i can usually just pick up any p and get a usable/good tone
Gonna have to disagree on that account. The neighbor cats do not bark all day while I'm trying to enjoy my life. And they don't crap on my lawn. They don't threaten me while I'm jogging because their owners don't know what a leash is for.
Anyway, back on topic. I have all three... J-bass, P-bass, and early 50's (style) P-bass. The reason I have all three is because they all do certain things really well. One is no better, generally speaking, than any of the others. If I were doing musical things that would sound better on an Ibanez or a Zon or an MTD or an F-bass... I'd have one of those too. I do have a couple of Mustangs, not because they are better or worse than any other bass, but because they do certain things that I really like.
