Are signature basses really worth having?

If I were going to mod a bass to suit me exactly it would end up looking like a Reggie Hamilton Standard Jazz. Once I realized that Fender already made exactly what I wanted I just bought the Reggie. If you find a sig model that matches what you are looking for they certainly are worth it.

I walked into a great bass store a while back and they had all these fancy Fenders. Some active, a bunch of signature Fenders, road worn, real expensive Vintage copies. I could only find two plain old $950.00 American Jazz Basses (new 2013). I asked why he only carried two of them and had so many of these expensive fancy jazz basses. He said the only people who buy the smartly priced plain old American jazz basses are real musicians. He couldn't make a living off of selling to real musicians.

HA!
