Are you a one bass guy, or not?

I was for some time, maybe a year or so. My only bass was my '89 G&L L-2000. However, after immersing myself in 70s fusion/soul and hearing Anthony Jackson on his "Career Girl" Jazz, I knew I needed that sound and put together my own parts build. I am now a two-bass hitter.

If I was in one band I would mostly be a one bass guy. Depending on the group, I play a G&L LB-100 (my P-bass), a G&L MJ-4 (my J-bass), or a Reverend WattPlower prototype (basically a shortscale P-bass). Although, depending on what I'm into at the time I might favor the P or J across groups. TLDR; No.

Currently own 6, of the 6, 3 are used regularly.

Regular use:
  • 2019 Fender California Series Kingman V2 and 2012 Ibanez SRX2EX2 are my everyday players and gigging basses.

  • 1985 Epiphone EMG GZR P pup equipped, or the "Epicision" as I call it, is my music writing and recording bass. Would be a gigging bass. But it's also the heaviest of all my basses. It does make a special live appearance every now and then and always gets compliments on it's sound from other musicians.

Currently not in use:
  • 2015 Squire Jaguar, electronically is not in any shape for playing and I'm going to replace the pups. Then it should be more than fine and could fall into the played regularly category because it is a very good, fun playing bass as far as neck, feel, etc...

  • 2000 Cort Curbow Signature 4 Series is retired. I never really liked the bass, but it got me back to playing and gigging again. So it's a keeper as a reminder of where I came from.

  • 2018 Ibanez SR400EQM. Currently not used at the moment. Great playing bass. And it is what replaced the Cort. It was also my main gigging bass, 2 to 3x a week for about 6 months. But I'm not a fan of the 3 band active EQ. Maybe I'm just not in tune with dialing it in correctly. Don't know what I will do with this one just yet. Probably will put a set of Chrome flats on it soon and it could be an extra gigging bass as a backup for the 2012 SRX.

I like ti mix it up occasionally, but I have certain basses that have their own specialties that work best in those environments and nowhere else, and then I have a few Fenders and Fender "tributes" for when I need an all-purpose bass that can do it all. And even them I divide into roundwound and flatwound. But I almost always only take one to every gig and I do that under protest :D I hate changing basses during a gig if I can help it. Sometimes I have to, like if I need a 5, and then I'll change just for those songs and switch back at my earliest opportunity. But in most gigs I do, one good Fender bass is plenty.

In every mile of my humble music career; I had a main bass and an accompanying cheaper stunt bass with similar specs.

I use the main bass most of the time, and take the stunt bass to "dangerous" gigs - when airplanes, trunks, roadies, etc. are involved.

Works for me.

Currently, I have an American Original '60s Jazz Bass which is amazing (to me) + a Player Jazz Bass which (thanks to the tort pickguard I added) looks almost identical and sounds & plays good enough.

I have a Carvin LB76F greenburst as my only fretless, and 2 absolutely identical Yamaha purple-plum metallic RBXJM2 basses, one of which I arbitrarily use as my main, but since they are clones it's essentially the same bass.

One bass for fretless needs and one bass of exact twins for fretted playing.

I have a Gibson SG bass and concur. It's one heck of one bass. :thumbsup:

I own 5 basses. Two of them are standard 4H Stingray's. The reason I have two is for different tunings. I do 90% of my gigs with the downtuned Stingray. If it wasn't for the different tunings I would easily be able to do all my gigs with a single Stingray.

My go-to girl is Jenny, a hot rodded Harley Benton PB Shorty, but she is by no means my "one and only". I have a dozen basses at my disposal, and rotate through the lot. One or two weeks playing with Jenny, then one of the other ladies, then Jenny again...
