Are you an organ donor?

Even if the system is corrupt, I think you will still be doing someone some good.

If the corruption that worries you occurs (or is occurring), be it selling organs on black markets, them going to undeserving people, etc, that means there are less organs out there for those who need them. The more organs in the "system", there are more to go around, and more deserving people will end up with them. Even if your particular sacks of tissue get put to bad use, they would be taking one for the team, allowing someone else's to go to a good cause.

One added bonus is your family and friends. At a recent funeral I attended, it was announced that many of her organs were donated (per her wishes) and about 3 people were saved. They were able to say that a newborn baby, a little girl, and a mother now have longer lives because of her. It gave solace to alot of people, and helped their grieving. They won't necessarily find out if your organs are put to bad use. So one reason can be for your family and friends, and helping them get through your death.

And there is that whole "I'll be too dead to care" thing.

I don't disagree with anything you said. I should have asked this question: When you donate your organs, does some ******* doctor or hospital make tons of money off you?

Yes, I agree. It would certainly suck to have your body reunited with your spirit, only to find out it won't function properly without a heart or liver.

Like..."Oh, sh*t, what was I thinking?"

That is, providing the rest of your body hasn't decomposed too much by then.

Think about it the other way. You were just hit by a car and are in serious need of several organ transplants. There's a recently deceased donor with matching parts (this whole thing works like Mr. Potatohead does, right?), but his family won't let you have them because they're more concerned with making a buck than the hospital.

Oh, and most families don't keep organs on hand to sell to a hospital or eBay when someone who needs them pops up. The kitchen freezer isn't quite the right tool for organ storage :D

I think I'm being misunderstood; I have no problem donating my organs and would be thrilled (wouldn't know it of course) if I could save other lives. I'm just not crazy about all the money going to the hospital, and not some of it going to my family.

I can't think of a part of the bible that forbids it. I can't even think of an organ transplant surgery mentioned in biblical times :p

I know Jehova's Witnesses forbid blood transfusions and organ transplants and people have died because of it. God can create everything in 6 days and have enought time to spare to just sit around for the 7th, but he'll be damned if he can give you some new organs once you meet up at his crib.

I don't go to any church. I believe in God, and I make up my own mind about what is or isn't right for me and my own life. Everything about organ transplants just creeps me out. I think that medical science has crossed way over the line into "playing God" territory and it just strikes me as wrong in a way that is difficult to describe. There is just no question in my mind, it comes from deep within me, I just know it's wrong. (for me)

I don't believe in god, but for the purpose of a very serious question: Modern medicine has been doing god's job for how long now? Organ transplant is merely one minuscule facet of what medical treatment includes.

I meant that if god set up a rule that won't allow you to have an organ transplant that could easily save your life and allow you to continue living and doing good for other people, then he must not be too keen on keeping people alive.

You're originally issued a long umbilical cord connected to your mother but we cut that off :shrugs: It can't be that bad an offense. If you have a newborn daughter who needs a kidney transplant, god would have to be a pretty cruel dude to say she'll go to hell if you give her one. Or if you get in an accident and have the opportunity to donate your organs to other people so that they may live, god would have to be a pretty cruel dude to say it's more important for you to keep your organs than to let other people live. If there is a god, I would not think he would be anything remotely cruel, so I've never seen how it could go against any religious beliefs. There's also no mention of organ transplants in the bible, so whatever rule that says that now is manmade, not godmade.

I respect your opinion, so take my words with a light heart (no pun on the thread intended)...

My feeling is, like yours, that only God will determine whether you live or die.

In that light, consider that if it's your time to go, whether you get an organ intended to save your life, or not...God has already made His decision, and nothing any surgeon does will change that.

If you truly believe that God determines your fate, then to believe that someone receiving your organs will change that, then your belief is in contradiction. Either God does determine it, or He doesn't, regardless of the human intervention to change it.

Discussion on this topic will come down to religious vs non, as it has, and it will stay there, as now it is linked to each person's core beliefs, so each to his own. As long as whatever you do or have done with your body makes you the most comfortable and satisfied, thats the right thing.

And as far as medicine playing god, its all in your beliefs too. This is just one example of medicine being furthered, but where do you draw the line? Some things just happen, some randomly happen, and if you can change a situation for the best, why not? If it's against your beliefs, then don't. Some people choose to accept organs or donate or whatever, and they can live with that and be happy.
