usually 45-105, roundwound... just put a set of 50-110 on my Black and Gold... so far I like them... we'll see

I use Optima Gold 0.045 to 0.105 gauge strings.

I just obtained an SB700 - black & made in 1981. I put on some new Rotosounds - 45 - 105.

I love this bass! I've been doing a little research & from what I see in an old '81 Aria catalog (which list the SB600 & SB1000, but no SB700!) that both the 600 & 1000 contain the same pickup - the MB-1E double coil pickup.

My bass is passive, but really sounds active. I can only imagine what kind of sounds I would get if it was active. I am truly impressed with this bass & it's 28 years old!!

I got an Aria Pro II SB-400 from eBay. Build year is supposedly 1982. Ergonomically this bass (medium scale!) is by far the best I've ever played, but the pickup is a bit weak and the tonal range is somewhat narrow. I would like to have more boom, punch, bite and brightness. Then this bass would be near perfect.

Is it a mortal sin to replace the original pickup with a replica, built by Aaron Armstrong? How much will it really affect the tone?

AHHHH, so I havent been in this thread for quite a while, but For those that remember me, for about the last two months, I have looking desperately for a pair of pickups that'll fit my aria integra 5er( mentioned probably a dozen or so pages ago, too lazy to look). Does anyone know of a place where i could find aria pickups or after market pickups thatll fit relatively well. I dont want to mod the body for new pickups, so hopefully its possible. I've been "playing" with it for like 3 months and it just feels so right in my hands, just have to put in the lectronics and kapow, my new main bass. So comfortable.

Sounds like something is wrong with the pick up, so I guess it's not a mortal sin
I have two basses with those pups in them and they have a lot of output louder then any other passive I have played.
the sound is a bit narrow but sits well in the mix

I think I saw that same bass on eBay a few months ago (same seller, I think). It looks pretty nice, and appears to have real Gotoh tuners (the newer kind) and Gotoh bridge. Usually the lower end models will come with no-name hardware. It might be a model that was intented for the Japanese market. That doesn't mean it was made in Japan, of course, but maybe the seller can tell you. Most of Aria's stuff in the US is now just marketed as "Aria" except for some of the higher end models and RIs which are still labeled as "Aria Pro II", which makes me wonder if it was intended for markets outside of the US. You could probably contact Aria USA to find out for sure: www.ariausa.com .

SB-600:

"3 ply maple detachable neck, brass nut, chrome bridge, rosewood fingerboard, 24 fret, laminated maple body, single MB-1 double coil pickup, volume, tone. Oak, Black, or Sunburst finish."

SB-700:

"5 ply maple/walnut Transmit neck, brass nut and bridge, rosewood fingerboard, 24 fret, ash body, single MB-1 double coil pickup, volume, tone, coil cut switch. Walnut or Oak finish."

So, how is the neck?

Well let me see... it has brass nut and bridge, volume, tone and a switch, but the knobs are different from the normal sb 700's and that's why i don't know which one is it. Also it is heavy as hell, over 8 kilos. Here are more pics:

It is neck thru, so I suppose it is SB-700. The knobs just are not originals.

Wouldn't 8lbs be a reasonably light bass?

Tho I must admit, 8Kg, being 17.6lbs is pretty hefty!

Is it possible to replace worn or damaged SB bridge saddles with some other saddles, or are they absolutely unique and non-replacable?

I am wondering the same thing. Roundwound strings have made a mess of mine. Can anyone help as to what to replace them with & where to buy?

I recently put a set of Thomastic flatwounds on my SB & I love them. I cant imagine using anything else now.
