asked to sign autograph after a show

One of the cover bands I put together played a charity show (Relay for Life - Cancer Council).

We were the last act to play and the kids were getting pretty loose and some were dancing on stage and after we finished I was asked to sign a few t-shirts.

It felt weird ... a cover guy being asked for an autograph, but I signed anyway. Why not hey? I just signed my first name (Andy) and ran the Y back under my name, then drew 3 more lines under it and added some tuners to make it look like a bass, then under that wrote the bands name and the year between dashes. Lame as it is to admit it did feel kinda cool getting mobbed for autographs LOL :)

I don't understand it from the point of the autograph-seeker, but for the musician? Sure, why not? It'd be kind of a jerkwad move to say no to a fan who asked for it.

I typically draw elementary-school-quality, male genitals 'placing' baby gravy on a bandmates name, next to my scribble of a signature. I find it's hard to forget such a kind gesture from a grown adult :) bahahha

My bud waited around for Steve Vai to show up at a strip club near the venue they were playing. This was years ago during the Whitesnake days. He finally shows and the roadie my bud had been hanging with introduces them and says "Steve, this guy has been holding my dick for two hours, he wants an autograph". Steve signed "You can let go now.. Steve Vai".

Oh, it was a CD copy of Flexible Leftovers.. The roadie joked to Vai - "hah, somebody actually bought that!".. good times..

I have signed a few of our Cd's and posters and its really cool to me at least. I know one fan of ours even had the whole band sign our poster and he framed it. It may be simple but thats really worth more than any gig money to me.

Recently, I've been asked to sign our CD and I'M NOT EVEN ON IT! LOL! I play keys and there's only minimal keys on it played by our singer.
It was released before I joined the band, but of course we perform all the songs on it.

IMHO, it's flattering and I appreciate that the people enjoy our music! It's also very cool to meet people and that people want to meet us, after the gig, even though we're just local yokels. It's all about the networking.

Heck, there are people that I went to school with that I wish I would have asked for their autograph back when they were doing Cafe shows at school or playing the bar scene! No way I can get it now since they're on tour or recording! I've had more than a few, "Holy crap, he lived in the dorms 2 doors down and played drums at so and so's recital!" moments over the past 15 years since I went to music school!

Everyone came from somewhere! They didn't all become rockstars overnight! The band you see at your local bar may not be famous right now, but you never know in 5 years or so...

More useless anecdotes, a college buddy of mine used to see Dave Matthews do solo, acoustic gigs in his hometown back in the day, when he was a nobody, like the rest of us! I wonder how many local yokels asked him to sign his CD or sticker or tshirt back then? :)

Kinda reminds me of when I would be playing with one of my bands and our lead singer's smokin' hot 25-ish (if even) daughter would get up on stage and start grindin w/me and the other band guys who are all as old as her dad or older. No awkwardness there. :rollno:

I dont ask people why they want my autograph. I dont know why. And frankly I dont care. If they ask me, I'll sign it.
I dont feel empowered by it either. I could take it or leave it.

Maybe you just dont make much of an impression.

Like rappa29, I have signed a cd that I did not play on. (joined the band after that dude quit.) Also signed some posters that had a pic of the former bass player, so I drew on his face to make it look like me (hair, porno mustache, sideburns, Clubmasters...) I thought it was frickin' hilarious, but I may have been imbibing in herbal medication and barley pops. It was a little akward getting asked to sign something, but I got over it. Never thought to add a vulgar comment, I'll remember that in the future.
