Number of shooters still seems to be sketchy ("at least 2" according to the New York Times), and number of targets in Ottawa as well. Police are saying "Incidents occurred at National War Memorial, near the Rideau Centre, and Parliament Hill". At least one soldier shot while standing guard at War Memorial.

From NYT:
"OTTAWA — At least two gunmen traumatized the heart of the Canadian government on Wednesday, with one shooting a soldier guarding the National War Memorial and then entering the adjacent Parliament building, where multiple rounds were fired. Shooting also was reported at a nearby shopping mall.
Police officers rushed to secure the Parliament building and move occupants to safety as they hunted for what Canadian news reports said were possibly two or three assailants, in what had the appearance of a coordinated attack.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that one assailant was killed. The condition of the soldier who was shot was not immediately clear.
The shootings began about 10 a.m., just as the leaders of Parliament were holding their weekly meetings, suggesting the possibility of deliberate timing. Many of the lawmakers were rushed into secure rooms in the basement by guards.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper had been inside Parliament at the time of the shooting but was evacuated safely, Canadian news reports said. The entire area, known as Parliament Hill, was placed on lockdown as police reinforcements arrived."

I have been following this since it started. Scary stuff, but it is to be expected with recent foreign policy decisions. The government actually raised the terror alert last week and didn't say anything about it, so what was the point of raising the terror alert?

The timing seems to indicate that this is an organized terrorist response to Canada sending fighters in support of the U.S. yesterday.

I think these types of things usually require more time to plan than that, but it could be.

Yes, this could've been in the works for a while. Canada was mentioned as an ISIS target a couple of months ago as I recall.

Glad there were so few casualties, at least announced so far. Hats off to the Ottawa Police department, the military on site and the RCMP for their quick and decisive action.

Keeping a good thought for all those wounded today and their families.

A few things. Most Canadians don't want to live in a society where to be safe means having to walk around armed.

Despite our efforts to control guns there will always be ways to get one for those who absolutely want to and who will risk the penalties of being caught with one. But one of the biggest difficulties we face is the sheer amount of guns floating around our a certain country we share a border with.

Finally, one horrible shooting does not make a trend or an argument, to imply, and so snarkilly, that our efforts at controlling them is wildly exaggerated and ridiculous.

The bits about the invading terrorist hordes and the end of civilization I will let lie, naked and silly on the page.

I am glad that things were bought under control quickly. I'm wondering how the gunmen got as far as they did. What kind of safeguards are in place at the Parliament building?
Metal detectors and armed security/RCPM/Ottawa Police and the military all have a presence there. Can't Wally see them, but they pop out of the woodwork just like they did today. Also have metal detectors at all doors that are open to the public. But really, it is a massive open field that is 100% open to the public, there is even a mass daily yoga class that meets there in the warm months.
