Attack on Canadian Parilament

You have young people defecting from Canada and the U.S. to join ISIS and similar organizations overseas.

What pisses me off about these people ( many are not foreign by birth and have never seen the skies over Syria or elsewhere, let alone set foot there before) is they grew up as Canadian (or U.S.) citizens (White, black and other nationalities), fully enjoying the freedom and advantages of Western life, partaking of the perks of freedom everyday or generally a life better than they would have had in the Middle East probably.

Then off they go to fight a war against the very ideal they enjoyed for years.

Taking another look at my previous comments, I'm a little ashamed of myself. Always thinking of myself as more a hippie/pacifist type you might say, ie treating all with respect and understanding, I'm surprised by my aggressive attitude. However, I'm not so foolish as to think we can all just live in peace and sing songs all day and love mother earth...there are those who threaten peace and love;the only way to deal with them is through force, there is no reasoning with people who have been indoctrinated since birth. I look forward to a day when the world can move forward as a family of beings, all with different cultures, but nonetheless happy with each other. Unfortunately, I don't see this happening anytime soon...
And I'll be dead before I ever live under Sharia Law.

Here is a photo of Sargent-at-Arms Kevin Vickers calmly helping to secure Parliament moments after shooting the suspect. If that man isn't a BAMF, I don't think anyone is.

White and black are not nationalities.

The phenomenon you're talking about, and the fact that apparently the shooters were white converts to radical Islam, should tell us something. These are people that DON'T enjoy that ideal. Western society has been very good at giving them freedom, but not nearly as good at giving everybody a sense of purpose or belonging. There's a part of the population that slips into disaffection, alienation, and hostility. And in a society where we can immerse ourselves on the internet, it's much easier than it used to be for alienated people to link up with other alienated people and reinforce each other's dysfunction, and make the hostility and insanity seem "normal." Just like on TB where it's easy to start thinking it's "normal" for a hobbyist to expect to buy a $5000 bass - but in this case, with much more sinister and tragic outcomes. A generation ago, someone with that alienation would have been isolated and much less likely to go to the extreme action. Now they have a virtual "community" that urges them further and further on and treats them like heroes. It's fundamentally the same as with teen school shooters, or for that matter anorexia. You can find websites out there where girls go and egg each other on to become more and more anorexic.

Good points, and the next question is what can we do about it? I'm not talking about our government or somebody I know I'm talking about me. I think a good place to start is making friends with my neighbors even that one guy who lives three doors down. Don't pretend you don't know who I'm talking about.:)
Here in my city people can live somewhere for years and not know any of their neighbors. When I reached out to them and tried to start building a community I saw how hungry most people are for that. I put together a few events and everyone loved it. It changed the whole atmosphere in this neighborhood. We started becoming a community.
The next step is for me to learn how to LISTEN. Most people love talking about themselves if I just give them a chance. Usually a few leading questions then just paying attention will do it. I don't go into long stories about myself or give unasked for advice. I just listen. I'm not saying it is always easy either, there are some very broken people in this world. I have issues too and it is so easy to let my issues collide with those of other people. Sounds like a movie "When Issues Collide."
It is tragic how many people go through life unknown and unheard. You see that family sitting alone at the back of the church or meeting. That elderly woman trudging off to the grocery store always accompanied by here little cart and no one else. How about that geeky teenager up the street who doesn't seem to have any friends? I could go on here but I am sure you can think of some people where you live. Sure some people won't want to be friends and that is okay. I keep being friendly and saying hello when I see them.
I know it is only a small answer but it is a start. Alienation in our first world countries is a problem. I think that is why we see more serial killers and other types of de-ranged people.

I'm in Ottawa currently, and was on a bus, passing by the Hill yesterday morning, when things were unfolding. I had no idea anything was amiss at that time, only learning once I'd arrived at my destination, to find the local news coverage utter and total.

Ottawa's downtown core was placed on lock down until late yesterday evening, and I understand civil servants are back to work today, albeit with some hefty security in place on the Hill.

I won't speculate on the rationale for these unfortunate events, but my heart goes out to all affected by them, especially the family of Cpl Cirillo.

No surprise on the perp's ID and affiliation(s).
Similar to no surprises on the USA's medicated-young-people events.
Repeating the same things and expecting different results is what again?

Thank God! My custom build comes in under $5000! Maybe I'm not insane after all!
