So your saying that 3.5 "rolloff" switch should protect the horn from getting damaged? 500W max will be the most ill ever ever send into the TC. Is the compression driver a component of the horn?
Okay. Some clarification here.
-The compression driver is the sound-producing part of the "horn." The "Horn" is actually referred to as a "waveguide" because it helps guide the sound waves into a particular dispersion pattern.
-I recommended using the rolloff switch for taste reasons, not to protect the compression driver.
-The compression driver is far, far more sensitive than the woofer, so Duke "padded it back" significantly to make the volumes more equal, meaning that it gets significantly less power from an amp then the woofer, on the order of around 10%.
-I believe he mentioned it was rated for 50w, which means that in this application it can take around 500w before having an issue.
-However, this is not the whole story, since the lower frequencies take significantly more power to produce, and the horn doesn't really reproduce anything below 800Hz or so. This means that even if you were running your 500W head flat out into the Thunderchild, the horn would likely not be seeing anywhere NEAR that amount of power since most of it goes to reproducing the low otes. Thus, it would really take a LOT of power to blow the compression driver, to the point where you'd be risking the woofer anyway.
-TL;DR: Don't worry about blowing the horn. You won't do it, until you're really risking blowing the woofer too.
Huh? Whats an extended-bandwidth cab? What do you mean by post-dirt EQ? Are you saying that eq'ing after fuzz or dirt and running a mixed dry/ effected single will keep the TCs horn from getting damaged.
-An extended-bandwidth cab is a fancy way of saying that a cab has the ability to reproduce a greater-than-average frequency range; typically through the application of woofers and tweeters, and possibly midrange speakers as well.
-Since we are used to hearing distortion through one-way cabs (cabs without dedicated high frequency speakers) the extended high end offered by these extended-bandwidth cabs can often sound "harsh," "buzzy," or "synthy" because we're used to hearing the attenuation of higher frequencies that one-way cabs tend to exhibit.
-In order to combat this, Greenboy was recommending some sort of EQ after your dirt pedals specifically to attenuate these higher frequencies to avoid the "harsh" or "buzzy" sound you can get while running distortion into some of them.
