AudioKinesis 112 Cab

From what Duke told me, 300 watts into the 15 would be about like 500 watts into the Thunderchild 12. Sounds not as efficient as a 4x10 but every little bit helps our beloved micro amps

+1 The little 112 takes quite a bit of power to get up to full volume, and I assume the 115 will be the same way, but will be more full and loud in an absolute sense.

It should work great with the Walkabout, but probably still not as loud as a high quality, higher sensitivity 410 with that wattage input.

Duke and I were talking about a cab to pair with a 100 watt tube amp like the Marshall Super Lead clone I've been using. Says that the TC112 would not be a good match, but thinks the theoretical 115 might be.

I have a TC12 on order and I am getting the side handles in addition to the top handle. Figured if I had to carry it for some distance, or up a couple flights of stairs, the side handles might be handy, even though it is pretty light.

I may be mistaken, but I think well before the Thunderchild was released, Duke was considering making a cab with an 18" speaker, which would obviously require a very different compression driver from the TC to cross over and get the dispersion pattern matched with the waveguide. I'm wondering how difficult it is with the 15"? Regardless, I'm much more excited for the 2x12 design that Duke has cooking :D

The 15 should be closer to as loud with 150 watts as the 12 is with 450 once power compression is accounted for. I would expect the 15 to be comparable to a MIDPRICED 410 in sensitivity but not a high end model. this assumes the 15 follows the same sensitivity relationship as a 3012 to a 3015.

he's doing a 115?

I've been out of town for several days, and didn't have internet access.

Yes it's true. I'm doing a 115, but the 212 is ahead of it. We're probably at least three months away from the 115 beginning to ship.

It is a compression driver like the 112, only crossed over lower which dictates a more expensive driver. The 15" driver is a custom high efficiency 4 ohm version of the 3015/3015LF. Cabinet size would be 25" tall by 21" wide by 14" deep and it would weigh just over 40 lb. The idea was to maintain a similar low end as the 112 but with the 15's increased efficiency.

I'm about 90% sure those will be the dimensions. Weight should be in the lower 40's.

I assume it would be identical to the relationship between the Thunderchild12 and the 12/6/1 cabs.

Bingo. I didn't really know what my "niche" was going to be before doing the 112, but looks like it includes doing just enough low end to get by with a 5-string.

The 18" monster is on the back burner for now; the 212 is imho a lot more interesting and cost-effective considering that the monster would require a large-format compression driver and much bigger horn. And I don't know for sure that I could make a really big horn sound good.

I will be using the same waveguide-style horn in the 115 as what you see in the 112. There will be an increase in pattern discontinuity in the crossover region, but we'll still do better in that regard than most bass cabs. And I'm pretty confident of getting a good blend between woofer and horn.

Good call - I was overlooking thermal compression.

My 15 was designed in response to a "3015-LF based driver that was as close as practical to just being a bigger version of my 12" woofer". Its parameters are actually closest to the 3015 (non-LF), but with almost as much excursion as the 3015LF.

I would like to publicly thank Aram for his input on the external dimensions of the 115 cab. My hope was to keep the shape relatively subway/bus/taxi trunk friendly even though it's a pretty big cab to be carrying around, and along these lines Aram suggested I keep the depth of the cabinet to a practical minimum.

Winner! :)

Seriously, thanks for the call out Duke, but I'm really just happy to have helped, and I'm definitely pumped you're going with those dimensions for this cab!

I've been grappling with lugging equipment around NYC and Chicago sans car for 15 years now, so I think your cabinet line is a godsend for many of us urban dwellers. I think the shallow depth, combined with different handle options will make the 15 very manageable on mass transit.

Can't wait to check it out!!

Excellent!

Fyi, the Thunderchild 112 is now listed on the Tuki site, list price $69:

When I sent in my measurements I specified: Padded; Black; Bottom Strap; No Logo. I assume that's what you get with part number "adkthch1", best to check in case you want something different. I also measured so that the top handle opening would be wide enough to match the recessed "well" for easy handling.

Man, I've got to get started selling some stuff off seriously. Feeling the need for the TC15 :)

:D

I haven't even heard them yet, and I'm already salivating like Pavlov's dog at the mere mention of a TC15 or one of Genz Benz's new Streamliners. :hyper:

Hearing the Streamliner is one of my biggest motivations for attending NAMM this year; just wish I could hear Duke's cabs while I'm there.

Hey Ken, let me ask your opinion. If you had to play a loud gig, would you prefer a pair of thunderchild 1x12 cabs or a bergantino AE212? You are the best person to ask. Thanks, C.

Tonally and volume-wise, it would be a toss-up, both great. However, given that I dislike carrying two cabs, and also don't have any amps that are capable of 2ohm operation, it would not be an option for me.

I've never been a fan of 'modular' rigs, and always have tried to find the 'best' small cab and the 'best' large cab for my tone. At the moment, that is the TC112 and the AE212.

I am excited about the TC115 (or whatever it will be called). I think that will work for pretty much the largest gigs I ever do!

I'm guessing since Duke's niche is "Just enough lows to cover a 5-string" then it will probably be a fairly "tight" voicing.

Based on our talks, I'd say that he'll be going for as close to the same voicing as is practical for the two cabs, within the strictures the slight driver T-S variations themselves impose. So that would make the 15" version a larger, more sensitive version of the 12" one. And actually the 15" driver has a pretty high sensitivity figure.
