AudioKinesis 112 Cab

Since taking good advise from Billfitzmaurice and others, I have been boundary loading my JBL prx618s-xlf sub, running only kick drum through it. I noticed that when hitting low notes through my amp (facing forwards) at the same time as the kick, the low punch dropped out. Since the sub was faced in the other direction as my cab, I figured that they were out of phase so, I pushed the handy phase reverse switch on the sub. The thump came back. So, here's the question relating to Dukes cabs.

The thunderchild is rear ported. Will I not have to reverse the phase of the sub anymore since that may be pushing air in the same direction? Im just not sure how that works.

Short answer: Maybe.

Long answer: It really doesn't have anything to do with the direction the woofers or ports are facing; rather, the issue is whether the sub's woofer is moving outward (pressurization) rather than inward (rarefaction) in synch with the woofer in the cab.

Anytime you have a driver rolling off, whether due to its inherent characteristics or a crossover filter, its phase will be shifting. The steeper the rolloff, the more rapid the shift. And in the real world we seldom get rolloffs in nice neat increments of 6 dB per octave. So it becomes complex to analyze and predict the relative phase of woofer & subwoofer taking all the real-world factors into account; that's why I can't say for sure that the same setting will work best with my cab. The practical solution is to do exactly what you did: Try it both ways, and use what works best.

Correct. The design goal of this product is to be a very small, single cabinet solution that you can do a relatively large gig with, and also being able to get enough power into it with the current typical micro amp to make use of the amazing thermal/mechanical specs of this wonderful driver.

I have a LM Tube 800 and don't want to blow it. I guess if I keep the Master down it would be ok.
 
IMO, if you're reasonably careful and use your ears, you should be okay with an 800w amp, no? I don't recall what the TC is rated at, but I'm guessing 300-400, in which case, having an amp rated at twice the wattage (or so) shouldn't be a huge deal.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you're on the cusp of damaging the speaker, you should be able to hear it "giving out" audibly before it's actually blown...but engineers, please correct me if I'm wrong here.

Actually, Ken's response was correct as of yesterday. This morning I started the process that will lead to a production run of custom 8-ohm woofers which will be otherwise virtually identical to the 4-ohm one in the Thunderchild. It's not available yet, but should be in about 3 months. The number of people asking for an 8-ohm version of the Thunderchild finally reached critical mass.

This will carry over to the long-rumored 212 cab as well; rather than using the stock 3012LF, it will use the higher-efficiency/less-bottom-end custom 8 ohm Thunderchild-style woofer.

The bad news is, that pushes the 212 cab back by another three months (JimmyM, check your e-mail for a possible interim solution). But in the long run I think this will give me a better product line.
 
Yeah, and I really don't want to blow a $799 speaker. Guess it's not the best choice for my current setup.




IMO, if you're reasonably careful and use your ears, you should be okay with an 800w amp, no? I don't recall what the TC is rated at, but I'm guessing 300-400, in which case, having an amp rated at twice the wattage (or so) shouldn't be a huge deal.

Basically, if you are capable of using discretion and know to listen carefully, Aram is correct.

I don't use a lot of EQ or effects and I don't play at super-loud levels.
I am pretty comfortable using twice as much power as a quality cab is rated for, but some people are not.
I'm just saying, there is a certain amount of risk involved -- a fair number of bassists can manage that risk sucessfully, but some apparently cannot.

Totally agreed, I've generally looked for amps that have more juice than my cabs are rated for because I like headroom, and I tend to listen carefully to my equipment. While I do think that under "normal" playing conditions, an amp rated for 2x the wattage is safe, a spike can certainly damage drivers, and if your music is such that loud instruments tend to bury your sound, you may well not notice over-excursion.

As we've discussed before, I've always been an 8 Ohm owner, specifically for the ability to combine two cabs for larger, louder venues.
