AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I never really understood "fast" or "slow" when talking about speakers or cabs. Can someone explain to me please?
I believe this perception to be somewhat of a myth. Bass players have used those terms for years and I heard them and repeated them as well not knowing any better. I have come to the conclusion it all comes down to the quality of the speaker and build.

Yes I stated earlier the 18's I played through over the years never felt good to me. They always felt sloppy with way too much bloom. Not crisp as 10's I played through back then. Again I think it really comes down to the quality.

I guess perhaps slow was the best adjective to use to describe the inadequate sounding 18's back in the day. I don't think it was really a scientific explanation.

But I'm no speaker guru, so I defer to Duke on this.

I would think that with increased mass, comes increased inertia.
Starting & stopping the movement of the cone would require a stronger motor (magnet/voice coil) in order to get it to behave similar to a smaller driver with less mass.
I'm not a engineer, but I took just enough engineering classes to be dangerous.
To a certain extent, I would think that making the voice coil bigger &/or longer would have diminshing results because you're increasing the moving mass there as well.
I'm just speculating though - I find this kind of stuff interesting.

I have a question for all the people out there who have a Hathor 1855 & a BEAD(G) tuned bass.
How is the low end & over all balance with all the ports plugged?

What would be really great would be if you could try it on a gig where you're familiar with the acoustics of the place: for at least one set with ports plugged & at least one set with ports not plugged.

[Tom Bowlus, I know you're a very busy man (especially now), but maybe one of these days you could check this out with a really tight-sounding amp.]

Guys I have the TC112 V3 and its really amazing. I don't imagine there's a better 112 cab on the market. Just a fantastic cab.

OK since you decided to "go there", now you have to tell us all about it - in detail. ;)

We assume that just about anything Duke releases to market is going to be fantastic. But how is the TC112 v3 fantastic? Have you by any chance compared it with a v1 or a v2?

So guys, I'm in brainstorming here.... In conjunction w/ the new TC112 I posted above, I also have a two Hathor 1203 stack being constructed as well. My problem is that I'm friggin' loving the fullness and hifi quality of the TC112, and I'm finding that the mid switch on in "full nasty" mode provides an ample enough boost in the upper mid region to seem to be able to
cut through a mix....and while it was my original idea to have the 4 ohm TC as a single cab solution for smaller rooms, and the Hathor stack for everything else, I'm thinking I might better be served with either getting a second TC or a single Hathor to stack onto my existing TC.... So do you guys thing that a two Hathor 1203 rig would be redundant, or do you think I would find the two H1203 stack to be everything that the TC is but more of it?
@nostatic I see that you have had a two H1203 stack but opt rather to use the TC/Hathor stack in certain situations instead. Is that a best of both worlds, or did you find the two Hathors to be too much of a good thing? FWIW I'm a big B string user...

I haven't been able to do a comparison, but I'm going to say that I've been an ardent Glock user for a few years, and while the TC isn't going to blow away the Quattro 410, it does outweigh it in terms of audio imaging, form factor, weight, tuneability, and scleppability. The bottom end of the TC by far and away exhibits the most fidelity of any one twelve unit I've ever played ( and I've played a few). I will reserve a full detailed run down until I've got a few different gigs under the belt, and until I feel the driver has sufficiently broken in. I'll keep the forum posted.

I had a pair of H1203s and they can get plenty loud. They don't extend much lower than a single one, and I went to the TC/H1203 combo to get a tad more low end response. That said, I still prefer the sound of the H1203, so if I had it to do over again, I might just have kept the pair of H1203s. There isn't a huge difference between the two, though at some point a box can only go so loud/deep for a given size. If you like the sound of the TC (which is more towards flat/hi-fi), then having one of each is kind of the best of both worlds.

Well I will add there is a big difference gigging with the TC112V1 and Hathor 1203, as compared to two 1203's. Granted the TC112V1 is 4 ohm and from what I understand a different animal than the newer TC112 8 ohm.

My rig definitely goes lower and louder with the TC112v1 / Hathor 1203 combination. It is not only noticeable sound wise, but feel wise as well.
