AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

As a graphic designer I agree that a logotype is the way to go. I worked up a 3" wide logotype that should fit on any of the cabinets (see photo with other amps for scale).
Although in my experience working by committee is the worst way to get a logo solution because you'll never make everyone happy.

That's what I'm sayin' . . . . Can you italicize the "Kinesis" like Duke likes it?
 
There's no danger of confusing the products, believe me. For the same reason that a stylized, minimalist logo could actually do more good for AudioKinesis than than a logo that's plain Jane and generic. Here's why:

Duke's customers are, by definition, people who can recognize and appreciate quality. You don't need to market to to them in the same way you would market to a 17 year-old kid picking out his first rig at Guitar Center. In fact, clobbering them over the head with the product name, figuratively speaking, could actually be counterproductive.

These are people who can discern the quality of the product, simply by hearing it. If they like, they will be sufficiently motivated to follow up. Those are the kind of customers that Duke wants: People who are motivated to buy. People who don't need to be "sold". People who won't try to haggle over the price.

At this end of the market (i.e. high end), it's all about quality: Quality of product. But also quality of customer. The way you brand your product(s) speaks volumes about how you think your products should be positioned - and the kind of customer for whom those products have been designed.

Okay, Duke gave me his blessings: I'm getting a TC112 v3. Mine is not the first, he shipped out a v3 last week, but I believe mine is the first with the rear-firing tweeter. Looks like he will likely ship it out this week. I'm not at liberty to talk about how it all worked out, but I can say Duke's care for his customers is simply second to none.

I've recently rededicated myself to playing upright, so the inclusion of the rear-firing tweeter was an unexpected boon. Anyhow, I'm stoked. I'll be out of town for a bit but when I get back I hope to do another comparison recording. This time I'll use fewer basses, my fretless and fretted Jazzes, a Gibson EB, and a Christopher ply upright via a Rev Solo pick up. Down the road, if things work and I manage to acquire the Upton upright I'm thinking about, I'll record that as well. This time around I'll use an Avantone ribbon mic since I've discovered I really like how they sound vs their condenser. So much so that down the road I'm going to get a second one.
 
Does the rear-firing tweeter come standard on the TC112 v3? Or is it still optional, as with the two previous incarnations?

Is the new & improved crossover the main feature of the upgrade? Is there anything else that's new with v3?

Yes, as Marial said, the rear-firing tweeter is optional.

Changes incorporated into the Thunderchild 112 v3 include:

- Four 2" diameter rear-firing ports instead of two 3" diameter ports, to give more flexibility with the low-end tuning.

- The new factory 4-ohm version of the 3012LF is standard, along with the "4/8 ohm" switch. The weight goes up by 1 pound, and the price goes up a bit too, but hey, new switch!! The "4/8 ohm" switch (and its accompanying one pound of resistors) can be omitted.

- The crossover has been redesigned, and while the mid-switch in "grindy" mode still isn't real aggressive, it's got a bit more "bite" than previous 12" Thunderchild cabs.

- The compression driver is the one I've been using in the 8-ohm version of the TC112 v2.

- Unfortunately the new crossover board isn't retrofittable to earlier versions. The parts on the crossover board and the nearby inner flares of the ports have to dovetail together because things are pretty crowded inside the box, and the old port flares don't dovetail with the new crossover board.

I've rethought my stance on the impedance switch - it makes more sense than I was originally giving it credit for.
Some amps that have a SS power amp have more gravitas at 4 ohm than at 8 ohm.
Not sure if one cab will be enough to cover the gigs you'll be doing, this will let you go with getting the most from your SS amp without having to change from one 4 ohm cab to two (tutu?) 8 ohm cabs - need another cab, buy another cab, flip switch, carry on!
 
Duke can you describe the tonal difference between v2 and v3?

Well I haven't actually heard them side-by-side, but there will be a strong family resemblance. The V3 should have a little bit more "grindy" with the bottom (midrange) switch in the UP position, hopefully enough that it will work well on a wider range of electric gigs. For upright or when you want smooth, the V3 clocks in just a little bit flatter than its predecessors, probably as a result of me refining my crossover design technique a bit over the years (I'm using a different topology for this crossover circuit). But I'm not claiming any major improvement, just hopefully an incremental bit here and there.
