AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I have Thunderchildren which have the high end rolloff. Sorry, that's the limit of my experience. Don't know about the Hathors.

I'm a huge fan of Duke's cabs. My search is for the best amp to work with them for my purposes, having had recently trouble with using Markbass with them.

I understand and respect that others have different needs/uses for their equipment. I don't tell others they are wrong because they do things differently than I do. It just rubbed me the wrong way when I was told that there is something wrong if I am wanting eq with more than two knobs.

Your irritation with others is understandable.

But in fairness, seeing your latest reply, obviously you did not read my first post carefully. I took care to mention specifically "the AudioKinesis bass cabinets with switches and plug-able ports." If that definition happened not to include Thunderchild models, then I was not referring to them. And if it did include Hathor models, then I was referring only to them as concerned midrange adjustments.

A friendly suggestion: If you let the comments of random people online get next to you, even those you feel are directed at you or your opinions, you will have no peace in your online life. Just let them go by; and if they are actually offensive then ignore the poster.

I've had issues with distortion at what I'd call fairly reasonable volume. (OK that's hard to define.) Others on this thread have suggested that because of the clarity of the TC cabs I may be hearing mid range overtones/breakup that wouldn't be audible in other cabinets. It's occured in several different rooms with different bands. The LMlll is a perfect match for the TC cabs in terms of output so it's not like I'm overdriving the cabs.

I have both the 115 and the 112. I've only noticed it in the 115, but that's likely because I use the 112 in rehearsals and the 115 on gigs. (Significant volume difference.)

Just a data point, but I've used my MB F500 many times with my TC115 v1 with no problems at all.

And yes, the LM II/III and F500 are different topologies. (I love using big words that don't fit into my every day life .)

Might be interesting to give your TC112 a shot at gig volume as well.

Other than this issue, do you like the tone of the LM3 through the AK cabs?

Random data point: I had distortion with my TC212 when playing the low B of a Victor Bailey fives string at living room volumes. I returned the cab to Duke (and I'm now the very happy owner of a TC112v3) but I don't know if Duke ever had time to diagnose the issue with that cab.

Using a different head would be the best first step in the process of elimination. Beyond that I'm runnin on empty.

I don't love my LMII through my composite Audiokinesis 115 at lower volumes (smaller clubs), fortunately plugging 2 or 4 of the ports helps. At higher volumes, all is well.

I really appreciate you guys sharing your experiences about amplifiers. This is an area where I'm unable to give good answers when I get a question from someone, and so many times I'll suggest that they post a question here. So you guys are doing me a huge favor.

None of my first-generation Thunderchild cabs had a mid switch; my midrange voicing paradigm hadn't evolved far enough yet. And even once I did start putting midrange switches on my Thunderchild cabs, the effects of the switch have been more subtle than in the Hathor cabs. This is because in the Hathor cabs, the midrange switch is affecting the cone midrange driver as well as (in most cases) the woofer, while on the Thunderchild cabs with mid switches, the switch is only affecting the (top end of the) woofer. While theoretically I could have bumped up the bottom end of the horn on the Thunderchild cabs to get a more growly tone, imo a horn is the wrong tool for that, and also that's not a region where the compression drivers on the horns have good power handling.

PDGood, if the distortion turns out to be in your cab, we'll find a way to fix it whatever it is.

my main rig is a TC115 v1 4ohm and a Shuttlemax 9.2. Even with the SM9.2's rated 900 watts, outdoors on an "open stage" the amp runs out of gas pretty quick if i'm not careful with the EQ.
I have a LMII and except in clubs it just can"t feed that 15 what it wants.
