AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I've played my SVT through my Hathor 212 and just picked up a Prodigy. They sound fabulous! And the Prodigy actually looks good on top of the cab.

My question IS would the DB751 match up well with my TC/ Duke`s designed TC212 (loaded of course with 3012LF`s) and (Mike A. built Composite 40 pound, 900 watt ~ 4 ohm version of the Thunderchild TC 212)?

(Am I right in thinking Aguilar builds products/cabinets to match "their own"..... even though I obviously see others recommending Berg`s and Fearfuls, etc.).

I think I get what you're trying to say here, that the GS cab is somewhat "mid- scooped" while the DB is mid-focused, but for those who haven't tried one, there is nothing scooped about the TC cabs, IMO - they're very "flat". I do get what you're saying, but I wouldn't want to mislead folks about the TC sound. Hope you don't mind the clarification.

Did you run across a 2nd hand Arnopol built TC212?
Mike doesn't build with composites anymore - is why I ask.
For my taste, the DB750/1 amps would match up better with one of the Hathor cabs, but that's just me.
Not sure if Duke is still building the Hathor 18" cabs, but if so - "Winner, winner, chicken dinner!"

lo-freq: My TC212 was built by Mike when he was doing the composites. See the link to his post below from 2012.
What about the 18" driver cabinet (run with the DB750/1) that you are stoked about?

Hi all. Another want, not need. Considering picking up a Birdhaus 46. Wondering if others with real world experience can chime in some more. So far, users have on the whole been very pleased, with one user finding it a bit dark sounding. I'm wondering how it handles the lowend (I play 4 string). I would envision using this mostly in bluegrass jams/gigs as a different flavor to a Barefaced One10. Would also try using it paired with a Hathor 1203 (or possibly TC112) for more electric/rock/jamband stuff. (I love Duke's cabs and have owned almost all of them (sadly, I'm down to only 3 :(), so I don't need any info on his cabs generally.) Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! DM

Thank you very much Jimmy!

One day I may go into detail about that cab Jimmy beta-tested for me, which pre-dated the original Thunderchild 112. It arguably did some things pretty well, but I felt like it needed refinement in one or two areas. Hopefully at some point it'll be ready for prime time.

The Hathor 18" cabs had to go on hold for a while, but they are coming back. Over the past few months I've been testing drivers and making enclosure refinements and otherwise getting my waterfowl arrayed in a linear fashion. It looks like there will be three versions of the 18" Hathor cabs, as well as other 18"cabs that aren't "Hathors" per se.

I would say the Birdhaus 46 is more of a low-E cab than a low-B cab.

Regarding the "bit dark sounding", a couple of days ago I shipped the first Birdhaus 46 with a "cheater circuit" installed that gives us a bit more top end. Far as I know it hasn't been delivered yet. And anyone with a Birdhaus cab can send it back to have the cheater circuit retro-fitted.

Not sure if it matters, but the width can handle the DB amp.
I've played a DB750 before (through a GS112 + GS210 cabs).
I haven't played through any of Dukes cabs, but from @tombowlus descriptions, I'd think the Hathor 1855 would be a very good fit with the Aguilar amp (in a gnarly kind of way) - beast of a cab for a beast of an amp!

The prodigy does sound marvelous with the hathors and makes a perfect mini tube stack. Mine had a bad resistor. Mesa service was great but the trouble shooting (swapping tubes in the process of elimination), shipping cross country for service, future tube cost and general operation quirks were more trouble than it was worth. Sold it and the monique, got the subway and minimega and don't feel like anything's missing except some weight and worry.

I picked up the Prodigy used directly from Mesa at about half the new cost. It shipped to me directly from Petaluma after a full run through from Mesa. I'm hoping it doesn't have issues. We'll see..

I haven't been totally satisfied with any of the class d amps yet, I think my SVT has spoiled me. I've been looking for a smallish amp to pair with the Hathor since using the SVT with it isn't practical. I've got the MiniMega as well but there's still something missing when playing with the band. I'm taking the Prodigy to rehearsal tonight. We'll see how it goes.

Only thing I can think of is the ability to go 2 ohm like the Mesa D800. The Mega kind of negates that lack with headroom, though.

It's a wonderful amp. This is just one of those times when it's beneficial to be a man of low standards.;)

If you check any class D megathread (subway, tonehammer, shuttle, GK, minimega, veyron, kxb...) someone will say that particular amp has the thing that other micros don't and someone will say it doesn't have it. Heft is usually the thing.

Thanks, that's helpful. Is your tone goal leaning towards the GK cleaner hi-fi sound or the slightly warmer MarkBass vibe?

Have you tried the Bass block? I have so far used a Gk1001rb, Eden 550 wt and now Quilter bb800 with my AK cabs and it is the winner so far. I haven't tried every single micro head out there though, I am not that interested in most of them TBH. The quilter is warmer than most and I dig the super simple controls. YMMV of course
