autotune..... when will it end?

Im sure this has been covered but I just have to rant for a minute. an aquaintence came over last night with a rough mix of his new band.... the singer uses autotune the entire time. I mean like the WHOLE time. dont get me wrong... im all for using a cool effect when its done tastefully and in moderation but this is getting out of control.
on another note this singer is using autotune in order to correct their lack of an ability to hit notes. ugh... just thought id rant. sorry.

ya know i dont mind it so much with rap/hiphop since i dont listen to much of it.
my main concern is when i hear some new band and its this huge epic breakdown with awesome screams and then all of a sudden out comes a 9 year old kid with slanted bangs soaked in autotune

lmao that is precisely what i am talking about hahahaha. a dude at work was listening to them and i walked up right in the middle of a breakdown.. i was like woah... these dudes can throw down... and then....................

I have EVO and find it has the best algorithms you can get. If used tastefully you can seamlessly correct pitch with minimal artifacts but I agree, if it's overused to the point where you hear the note bumps, it sucks. I occasionally use autotune EVO on my Saturn 67 Bass, (which I love BTW), to lock in intonation when I play up the neck a bit. It takes some punch out at times on a big stretch. You have to use it carefully. I have been a recording engineer for 40 years now and just got on to this forum. Hope this helps.

Side note/derail...

It's weird to see a reference to ASD on TB!

I went to high school and was close friends with Cory Laquay, their drummer. (Dated his sister..haha)

I can tell you that..
1. They do not use Autotune
2. They are good for the genre of music they are in.
3. They all can't play anything but that genre.
4. They all write by ear and have a severe lack of theory.

They are ok, Cory is a stand-up guy.

Crazy hearing them getting some mention here on TB!

(The bass player Brian is terrible, by the way)

Meh..... It seems like some new technology comes along every ten or twenty years that riles up the feathers of the musicians, and dire 'death of real musicians' thoughts abound.

Music will go on. The listening audience, and our customers don't care, so why should we?

It's just one more technology to use or abuse. Our band used it (or more specifically, another similar plug-in called Melodyne) on our latest album. It's not on our websites yet, as we still need some mastering done, FYI. We mostly used it to fix bad notes, but also used it for the T-Pain sound. We also only got the sax and trumpet players in the studio for a very short time - too short to do what we wanted. With the plug in, we got some really large horn sections!

When ever it's brought up, the only people who complain are other musicians. Other musicians don't buy the bulk of our CDs, and they pretty much NEVER go out to our shows, so I really don't care what their opinion of Autotune is. The audience just wants good music. If Autotune helps and doesn't hinder, we'll use it!

In my view, auto-tune gives the audience the impression that the singer's lips are moving along with the sound that is coming out of the speakers, which can be useful if the singer is on an extended tour and doesn't have the stamina to belt it out night after night.

So far as using it as an effect, like all other effects, it is clever the first few times, then gets cliched, and is eventually passed over for some other effect.

Sounds like Drop C and a lot of 8th notes
