Hey guys, Ive done a little research on this piece. I see that they are going for about 500 dollars. I am in a circumstance to buy one of these units for about 50 dollars. Are they any good?

Avalon Preamp DI?

$50.00? you kidding? that's absolutely steal I think, a lot of tech gadgets like pre-am and etc. wouldn't cost much less than their usual prices even if they are used. if it's the Avalon U5 and in good condition, go get it man. Although it's not as popular as it used to be, it's still good pre/DI and Avalon pre (forgot the model number) has become almost like industry standard or 'must' have for certain genres. even if you have to sell it, you won't regret it. Still, make sure it's U5 and in good condition.
For $50, it's either hot, or broken, or both...
...they are a great DI and preamp, but you'd still need a power amp, and if you wanted EQ beyond the preset tone shapes built into the unit, you'd need to add that too.
I had one, and had to sell it to fund another purchase. I miss it, but I couldn't justify it as just a DI, which is all that I used it for....but I paid and sold it for a bit more than $50....

You can say I'm yanking your chain, but I am most definitely not. Its not broken, because I used it in a live performance to test it. Its cool as a DI, but I like my 8x10's and Hartke LH1000's more. But I think I should buy it after seeing that they are going for FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS! I had no idea. Its not used (other than me). It was in the box with the directions and everything.
Sounds like its not really your sound so buy it and flip it for a few more dollars and buy something that you really want.

Well, you should buy it no matter what although, at that price, there's not much doubt that it's hot. You can easily flip it for $400 if it's in the condition you're saying it is. You're already up to $300 in this thread alone.
All that, but it's hot.
