Avatar Owners Club Pt. 2

I'm considering getting a single or pair of SB112. But I can't test them, nor the other ones I was interested in: Schroeder, LDS, Acme, etc. Does anyone know how the Avatar compare for sound, tone, and build quality against these other builders/brands?

I know the price is amazing, but I'd rather do my research now than just go by price. I'm using a Markbass F1 amp, playing mostly Prog and Classic Hard Rock, but also some Funk/Slap, and R&B.

Well, I've only owned an Acme (Low B2 Series II and a pair of Low B4 Series I) but I've played through a couple Schroeders. My thoughts:

Schroeders are probably better gigging cabinets than "bedroom" cabinets as they're loud and punchy, lows are somewhat muted (I played through a 1010 and a 1210 before Jorg used Neos). The Avatar will probably have stronger low end and less midrange.

LDS...Don will build whatever you want.

Acme: Very accurate, great lows, very (VERY) inefficient. I played in a very loud classic rock band with a B2 and a 1x15 EVM (in a TL606 cabinet) and the 15 needed to do most of the work. The B4 (4x10s) are monsters and even more power hungry, but I never played a gig with them (and sold them in a fleeting moment of downsizing mania).

I haven't played through an SB112, but I've owned and played through B210 Delta (both front and rear ported), B212 Delta, CB115, C15, B112, B210 Neo and a 410 Neo. The neo cabinets (with 10s anyway) have very strong low end and the tweeter provides plenty of top end.

Build quality is great...Dave has sold a lot of cabinets over the years and builds a fine product (as do the other builders you cited).

I've got an SB112 and a Markbass F1. It's a pretty good combination, although I really think you need two of them to get adequate sound output with a drummer.

Avatar uses the same cabinet for the 112 and the 210 - so, compared to the other cabinets you listed, the Avatar 112 is on the large and heavy side. It's a good value, though, to be sure.

Are you using the Neo or Delta speakers for the 112? I would want to go with the Delta, I could live with slightly more weight and have 500 watt handling.

Yes, I've read the Schroeders are more mid-heavy, which I really don't want. I'd prefer the lower tone.

I have an eye towards LDS as well, but the cost difference between an LDS 12 and Avatar is quite big.

I've read that the Acme's need a lot of power, so that's not interesting me either.

As a matter of fact, I bought mine with the Delta and subsequently bought a Neo speaker from Dave to put in it...so I've had both! No noticeable difference in the sound, and to be honest, given that the Avatar cabinet is a little heavy for a 112 cabinet, the weight improvement with the Neo wasn't dramatic either.

I came into this thread hoping to cure my GAS induced insomnia,...yeh,...not working.

I've posted in the past,...I'm sure I have a number but I'm really just coming in here to vent my plans. In my loud noise rock band in which I use a lot of thick fuzz I'm rocking this setup....

The guy that owns the vintage fridge doesn't want me to gig with it so I'm in the market for some new cabs.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with another B410NEO in 4ohms (the power amp is stereo and will take a 2 ohm load on each channel and my current cab is in 4ohms) as well as 2 more B410NEOs in 8ohms to use on the other channel in my loud band and also to have an 8x10 setup to use in my more straight forward band. That way I can run my GK MB2-500; which will only run down to 4ohms, clean (no distortion,...mainly just envelope filter and compression) for the straight forward band.

I love how clean the GK sounds but am not quite up to the volume; so pushing a little more air and getting a cab closer to ear level is what I'm going for and hoping the extra speakers space means I can back off on the gain and volume. Then I can combine all the cabs and have a thick wall (Yammy Pre + Ampeg poweramp + 4x410s) of ear assaulting, fuzzed out, feebacking bass for the noise/art/subversive/rock band. Some might call it overkill,....I don't.

I've had my current B410 NEO for over 3 years from know and aside from a wonky tweeter level knob,...haven't had any serious issues with it. It's done many a gig for me and always served me well. My money's been too wrapped up in effects for the past 2 years so it's definitely time to invest in some additional cabs. Oh and Dave's shop is literally a twenty minute drive away. Dave's a cool cat and supportive of the local music community,...it's a shame all the hipsters around here rock SVT-CLs and refrigerator cabs they bought from Guitard Day Care Center.

As a Fuzz addict,...I'd love to rock an all tube setup,...but I don't think you can get the versatility of cab arrangement that you can with a solid state poweramp. That's just really my lack of sleep commentary that most people around here are trying to make a fashion statement as opposed to music. :D

I'm already Member number 205, but added another Avatar on Saturday.

This is basically Time Consumer's fault ;)...when I bought his Sonic 610, I compared it to his new (to him) Avatar B410. I like both.

Fast forward a couple weeks, Music Go Round sends me a coupon for a 20% discount on a guitar or bass cabinet, they have a blue 410Neo (4 ohm) cabinet in stock... I take the 610 in, they offer me what I paid for it in trade and I get a nearly new B410 Neo with a nice padded cover for a few more $$$.

I'm enjoying it so far although my wife commented that it doesn't match the paint in the basement... The color is not quite as bright as it looks on the monitor, but it's definitely bright blue!

I've got the Dave's original prototype "Delta" 2x10 and 1x15, both 4 ohms cabs. I've also got a LMII that only pushes 8 or 4 ohms. In order to use both cabs together, I'm going to need a new head. Does anyone have any experience with the GB GBE600? I have an opportunity to trade my LMII for one, but am unsure if it has a bi-amped situation, with individual volume/eq controls per cab, or just the same signal sent to both cabs. If not the GBE600, what other heads should fit my needs? (upright AND electric) mostly jazz/blues/cover rock....HELP???

Lmao, nice to see the deal turned out sweet for ya, I wonder if they remember that cab, cuz if they did maybe they wouldnt have given you what u payed for it since I only paid 50 more when I got it from them. I saw the avatar too, but the blue just dont do it for me.

This came from the Kenosha, WI Music Go Round... Even if I went back to the Orland Park store, I doubt they'd know it's the same one (if the same people still work there).

Sure black (or blonde) would have been more traditional and I suspect that the bright color is what kept the cabinet in the store for so long, but I couldn't beat the price, it was available and I could always recover it if I tire of blue.

I'd be fine with any of the colors cept the really bright ones, the red blue and orange just hurt my eyes, lol. I really like burgundy tho.
