Personally I've found that I enjoy the avatar 12s better than the 10s. I'm selling my 2x10 and will have a second 1x12 soon hopefully. I'm glad I tried both.
IMO the 4x10 (or two 2x10s..) would be better for straight up rock, if that's all your doing. More particularly hard rock. I am doing more rock/pop, jazz, funk, alternative, and I prefer the 12s for that. My 2x10 perhaps went lower than the 1x12 but I found it more compressed and less defined. The 12 sits very well in the mix and I have gotten compliments every time I've played, even with just 1x12.
