Personally I've found that I enjoy the avatar 12s better than the 10s. I'm selling my 2x10 and will have a second 1x12 soon hopefully. I'm glad I tried both.

IMO the 4x10 (or two 2x10s..) would be better for straight up rock, if that's all your doing. More particularly hard rock. I am doing more rock/pop, jazz, funk, alternative, and I prefer the 12s for that. My 2x10 perhaps went lower than the 1x12 but I found it more compressed and less defined. The 12 sits very well in the mix and I have gotten compliments every time I've played, even with just 1x12.

I bought the neo 2x12 after my Mesa Diesel 2x15 went up in smoke! Great old school capable with low mid punch! Added 1x12 for solo or 3 12's with the 2 channel amp. Me likeee 12 neos now and hats off to Dave and crew for the great pricepoint/quality!

Hello fellow Avatar owners,

I recently acquired an Avatar SB112 Neo - 8 ohm and was pretty pleased with the tone in a low volume setting (apartment). Brought it down to a rehearsal this past weekend to give it a test at louder volumes, and it started farting out/distorting at a fairly low volume. Disappointed, I went back to my old cab. I'm using a Mark Bass F1 without extreme EQing, and it normally sounds very clean. Here are my o'clock settings...

Gain: 1:00
Low: 1:00
Low Mid: 12:30
High Mid: 11:00
High: 1:00
VLE: 5:00 (Off)
VPF: 9:00
Master: 10:00 (Started Farting!)

This 112 is a brand new unit. My intention (if it worked out), was to pick up another 112 for a light modular setup, but at this point, I might just get rid of it. I know Dave at Avatar is easy to deal with, but I figured I'd post a question here first to try to get some feedback. Any suggestions are appreciated.

It's probably the head. I think they were rated at 10% THD so after about 5 on the dial they start to distort. I had a model 220 back in the 80's My guitarist ran an amp repair shop and put the head on an oscilloscope and at 8, 4, and 2Ω it would start to distort after 5 on the volume dial. You can probably bring it to an electronics shop and they can run the same test to see if that's the case. They will run down to 2Ω IIRC so that's the best way to get it loud.

Hey spz8, I had the same problem with my 112 neo when I first acquired it. I played around with it for a while, never really got into the sound and there was quite a bit of farting to it, so it sat unused for a while (didn't want to get rid of it in case I really needed a lighter option one day), but I revisited it a few weeks ago when I got a new jazz bass, and boy did it sound fantastic! I feel like it needed a breaking in period of a few weeks of constant light playing or it just needed the right bass to open up. I mean, I'm still blown away about how great it sounded with the passive American Jazz, it doesn't sound too hot with my Ibanez prestige (that bass much prefers my pr410hlf), but with that jazz bass, whew, Im waitin for the cloth grilled ones to come out so I can have 2 112's.

hey man, i have a similar type set-up (sort-of :P) and i myself have never encountered this prob. i run an avatar 4-10 neo and a 2-12 neo, both 8ohms, with a markbass little mark II (same output as your f1, and the only difference is that the LMII has a Class A/B power section, while the F1 has the Class D. The pre is identical.) i have gigged my amp up to about 3o'clock on the master, bass and highs about 1.30-2, and never have any noticable farting. also not only was i running mine louder, but it was also putting out the full power, not just the 300 watt load at 8. i dont know man, but that just seems a little fishy to me, so something is probably wrong with your cab, or amp. Call up dave, he might be able to help you out a little more. good luck though. i love my avatar and markbass rig, hope you'll eventually get to do the same with yours. :D

When I first got my B210, I tried it out in my apartment (at lower volume, same as you) and freaked because I also thought I had a bad driver from day one. I don't know what connected in my head, but I somehow remembered someone around Talkbass saying something about having to plug a 1/4" jack on the back of a cab because of air noise. I checked, and sure enough, that's where the "farting out" noise was coming from.

A couple of those squishy foam earplugs to plug the jacks and bingo, problem solved! They're even tan, so they match the blonde tolex on my cab. :D

Just thought I'd throw that out there, maybe you're experiencing the same thing? I picked up a 30-pack at Target in the sleep aids section for $2.98, so it might be worth a try?

Try kicking your low to 11:00 or 11:30 and bring your low mid up to 1:00 If you're running an active bass or have hot pups also try turning your gain down and increase volume via the master. The cab is bright so turn the attenuator off or almost all off and roll off the treble on the bass if you're looking for a dark old school sound. You may also want to dial down the high on the amp and use the attenuator if necessary to add brightness. You should be able to get a nice articulate deep bass from it. It's not a cab for a mud after 3 days rain more feel then hear sound. When I first got the cab I tried turning the lows up on my amp, it didn't work. Also, if possible, get someone to play your bass (or use a wireless) and stand 15-20 feet away to really hear how the cab sounds. It's hard to make fine adjustments close to the cab, although farting will be evident anyplace you stand. Once you get good basic setting, adjusting to a room should be easy.

Thanks to all who have chimed in regarding my farting 112. I'll try out the EQ and input jack plugging suggestions at my next jam session and post my results. Yes Butch, I am running basses with active pre-amps. Also running compression to keep the peaks in line. I'm a finger player with the occasional slap/pop with a medium touch. Sorry I didn't mention these other variables in my original post. I'll keep checking in if anyone else offers further advice. Thanks again!

The Deltas were conventional magnet speakers, the neos use the lighter neo magnets. If you bought your cab new within the last few years it should be a neo, if not and the cab is significantly heavier then the current cab (@44 lbs) then you probably have a delta.

I just bought it about 3-4 months ago, so Im guessing its a neo.

I love it, either way.

Just sold my B212 Neo and placed my order 10 min ago for another SB112 in red tolex. I will now (in about a week) have 2 x SB112 sitting under my NeoPak, will post pics and a review of the two together when it comes in. Should be a very nice modular stack for gigs and one at practice sight and one at home in the meantime.

Let us know how you like it and how different, if any the sound is from the 212. One of my goals this year, economy cooperating, is to pick up a second SB112.
