Avocado!!!

Random useless fact of the day: In french the word for avocado is avocat. Which is also the word for lawyer. I'm not sure why that is but when you order guacamole in french speaking places, make sure to ask what kind of avocat they use. One is less edible than the other. I find.

The de-pitting process is cool with either.

Here's another interesting factoid about avocados: They have been described by biologists as an "evolutionary anachronism," and it is somewhat mysterious how they managed to not go extinct long ago. Long story short: In order to reproduce and spread, ancestral avocado plants must have co-evolved with one or more land animals that were large enough to swallow the fruits whole, so that the giant undamaged seeds would be dispersed when the animals defecated somewhere far from the tree. However, all land mammals sufficiently large to serve this purpose went extinct in North America some 13,000 years ago, long before the advent of agriculture. Today the avocado is entirely dependent on cultivation for its continued existence, but how it managed to hang in there after the extinction of the giant mammals until the advent of cultivation remains something of a mystery.

Here's a link to an article about this from Smithsonian Magazine, which also includes a few other amusing "avocado facts to drop at your next party":

An even more interesting fact which has probably already been mentioned is that avocado means scrotum, in a language I forget. You can google it for more info. I know it has to do with the texture of the skin and the fact that it's sometimes veiny. Sorry bout this info, but it's true.

I'm not convinced that this fact is "even more interesting" than the evolutionary-anachronism story, but I suppose everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.

However, if you read the article to which I provided a link, you would have seen that one of the "More avocado facts to drop at your next party" is this:

The Aztec word for avocado, ahuacatl means “testicle”. This is most likely because the avocado, growing in pairs, resembled the body part. After the arrival of Spanish conquistadors, Spanish speakers substituted the form avocado for the Aztec (Nahuatl) word because ahuacatl sounded like the early Spanish word avocado (now abogado), meaning “lawyer.”

Now I have to admit, anything that links lawyers to testicles is really interesting....

Er, not to change the topic or anything, but....

It occurs to me that "avocado" is actually a very musical-sounding word. Can anyone think of songs that include the word in the lyrics -- and especially any in which the word features prominently?

This thread is now reminding me why I usually steer clear of the Off-Topic forum: I wind up spending way too much time thinking about things like, well, avocados (and songs about them), when there are other important things I really should be focusing on....

yeah, like tequila!

Ha! Busted by someone who's been travelling in the same TB circles lately.

There's a big difference, though: I'm thinking too much about avocados in recent days because of this thread. In contrast, I started and regularly participate in the "Tequila Lovers" thread because I already spend too much time thinking about tequila. In one case it's the chicken, in the other case it's the egg.

Hey, maybe someone should some threads about chickens and/or eggs?!
