Double Bass Azola EUBs Megathread

I always plug my Original Bug bass in direct. It has just one passive piezo with a volume knob. Never got sounds I really liked with my SWR Workingman's 12 or a GK with a 15 inch speaker cab. Now I am using it with a SWR Baby Blue 2 and it's great. It seemed amp picky to me but perhaps a preamp would have eliminated that.

I received my Scarab 5 -- It's fantastic. I'm really, really happy with it. It's much more "acoustic" sounding than my Bug bass ever was.

It sounds great through my Baby Blue II. I spent a just a few minutes with a TC Electronic RH450 and a Berg AE210. I was able to get that rig to sound pretty good right out of the box as well.

I'm very happy to be back in the Azola club! Now I just have to dig through my old T-shirts and find my "Bassbegruven" shirt from 1999!

any clients are writed me,frequently asking about if i make baby basses in 34".

i`m very interested in build a 34" scale BB, like the BAMBINO ,or the GIPSY bass ....someone in the forum interested in help me in this proyect ....?

I need only:
the sizes from the base of the neck to the nut ,and the large of the fingerboard (IN CMS, please... )

Does anyone else have or had an issue with the tonal balance across the strings? I have a lightning bug floating top with thomastik solos. I've read lots over the past couple of days and maybe it's a string issue? But this is what I have tried.

I checked the measurements of string length and bridge alignment..
I moved the wing pickup in a little snug which actually helped a little bit.
I tried going through a fishman platinum pre. (I use a AI coda for amp).. this 'tidied' up the sound but the balance is still not 100% even across all strings.

The bass strings and beautiful, so full bodied. Then the D string gets a bit less bodied and the G is faint, thin, clacky, rubber band on shoe box. I did try to raise the action a bit because the only way to deal with it at the moment is to attack hard on G and D strings but then E and A are easy attack. So right away that's a head screw.

I read of people talking about different pickups but not of anyone actually changing the pick up, but it has also crossed my mind. I need to get this instrument set up well because my double bass is going to have a major internal repair job and I will not have it for 2-3 months.

What do you guys think? Is it a string issue? Pickup? The fact there is no weight to to top (scroll on a double bass)..

I just want to be clear also that I realise it's not a double bass it is an EUB. I just want even tone across the strings.

My original model Bug has just the one wing pickup and has good balance across strings. The stock Labella strings tended to be thinner and twangy on the D and G.

I've had good success with Helicore Hybrid light and now, Sensicores for good balance. Regular gauge strings seemed too bottom heavy and I've stayed away from them.

Yes, I agree with the bottom heavy effect of regular gauge. That's why I tried the thomastik solos. So you don't find the G faint or twangy with either of these strings? I think it would better playing jazz if the G was thicker. I must try! Thanks.

Both the strings I mentioned are far better than the stock Labella strings, although there's still a bit of twang on the open G that can be managed by damping slightly with a left hand finger.

Much less twang with the strings I mentioned than with stock. Even response in the range you asked about. Something else that's made a difference is my choice of amp. When I used SWR gear, the natural scooped tone led to twang and boom, especially with something like the Workingman's 12.

I find my AI head into a Wizzy 12 cab or my AI Contra combo to be much smoother and even sounding.

I suggest the following tests:

Try to reverse one of the pickups. (upside-down)

If it doesn't help, leave only one of them.
Try with both pickups.

Having two pickups is sometimes worse because there can be phase cancellations.

Yeah... I did try something like that. The bass is sounding a lot better than my first post. Maybe I'm just too used to the body of the double bass. It's become a feel thing. I actually recorded it and it sounds exactly like a double bass which is great but feels something else to me. I think I'm heading into the "sell" mode.
