I'm in love with this!!!! Any reason to go with the V7 over the M3? I'm shocked not to see a fretless option in this. I know many will say looks don't matter over function but MAN that thing looks amazing and the price is so low?!?!?!

I don't know, that's why I'm asking! :) Maybe that's it, just seems like a lot of changes in his endorsements recently. I can't imagine Fender being too happy with the arrangement, but MM must be worth it to them even non-exclusively.

I don't know if it's been officially stated ever, but I was under the impression that his deal with Fender was over, that Fender still has MM basses to sell but won't be making anymore. I could be wrong though.

Ah, could just be my confusion, then. I don't follow the "big names" quite as much as some folks do (well, I do, just different names, and most of my heroes are dead now).

It's not that I'm particularly following Marcus or Fender, just that I've been paying a lot of attention to the Sire thread and a lot of the speculation that goes with it. That and I can't imagine Fender would be ok with Marcus, or anyone under contract with them doing work with another bass company.

Yeah, Fender can afford some pretty expensive lawyers. So this Sire - are they a recent startup? Hadn't heard of them before the first thread on here a few weeks back.

After reading Sire's FAQ, gotta say, I like the way they're thinking. (Or at least, the way they claim they're thinking!)

Here's a rather long quote from the major Sire thread that I think sums up their intention nicely.


"We are not a big company like Fender, Gibson, etc.


There's pro and con to this situation.


**) The Bad side - we just don't have the money to spend on marketing, advertising, paying many players to advertise.


**) The Good side - rather than trying to complete with mega companies in advertising spending, we focused on making better bass and offer at better price to our players. This is our competitive edge.


We have our own factory in Indonesia where we build our basses. We don't send out orders like mega companies where a non related third party factory builds the basses for them. This is the usual production process for instruments below thousand dollars.


Our bass is not an OEM product like many companies. It is in-house production.


This is where the difference comes and is to our advantage. We have complete control over all the process of production on site, all the time. To have tight control over the quality, our chief builder moved to Indonesia and lives there to closely monitor and handle the production in person.


And from there, we bring the basses directly to US and sell them ourselves, thus eliminating the wholesalers, retailers, etc. margins that could push the bass price to over a thousand dollars easily for this quality bass.



Sire is a company that makes instruments with this kind of mind set. No games, just good instruments at the price that real musicians and young people can afford and enjoy. We don't have hiked up retail prices like many companies do and have different actual street price. We sell them at the best price upfront.


Our motto and spirit is proven by our instruments. Best quality bass at the given price, offered at the best price, teamed with the best player, Marcus Miller. All these values combined and offered to our players. I hope you will like what you will see soon!

The M3 does seem like a lot of bass for $299, I like the darker red BR color. Wouldn't mind trying one, but looks like it's mail order only.

I agree, I'm "meh" on the V7, just another J bass - unless there's something particularly new / special in there...

Preamp / controls have sweepable midrange - MM says that's a "must have option" (well, then it's not an option, is it?) Always one of my favorite features on active basses.

These are really impressive. The M3 is extremely GAS-inducing for me! The V7s seem very much like my SX basses only AFTER you've done all the mods and upgrades to bring them up to snuff. And at a reasonable price for all that good stuff too! I mean just start adding up what a nice bridge, tusq nut, 3 band sweepable mids pre, and new pickups adds to the cost of a bass. Yes, very reasonable price!

The M3 on the other hand is a whole n'other animal. I love the concept and I love the execution. The only thing it is missing is a string or two and to get my checkbook out would take something like a nice fretted-fretless pair of 5ers. If these basses are as good as they look, I'm sure they'll sell like hotcakes and eventually the options I want will appear.

a lot of speculation on the other Sire thread that Fender is dropping Marcus Miller off... if you go to Fender US website you can see that they no longer show the Marcus Miller at the site and another guy from Germany mentioned that his distributor told him that they will be having the last batch of Marcus Miller at Germany.

Evidence seemed to tilt to Fender no longer want to work with him anymore hence he went with Sire.

I suppose I should play one before I rush to judgment but these just don't do it for me.

It is simply not the bass Marcus plays so what is it at the end of the day other than an imported J copy with active electronics?
