That singer in Dragonforce sucks. I think the band sucks, but thats my opinion. All of their stuff sounds identical.

You don't have to tell me about playing bass in a country band, I did it for a year
.Vince Gill has a great voice. I'd give him a pass because he started in the 70s and he comes from a bluegrass background where you need to hit those harmonies dead on.
I guess I'm thinking about people like Garth Brooks (who admits he's not a great vocalist) when he was the top country dude in the 90s. It sounded like he was always coming in a little flat and sliding up.
I just don't think there are any country vocalists who have come on the scene in recent decades that can match Patsy Cline, Emmy Lou Harris, or George Jones. It seems the Nashville Machine is more interested in churning out good looking product.
I can't believe the best out of tune singer in modern day music has been left out of this thread so far! He's got it all, from terrible technique to missing most of the pitches, and people loved him for it!

Axle Rose...cool singer, i dig his tunes..but im not so sure that he could ever sing in tune live to save his life.

guys, rock musicians are not opera singers. yeah, most of them have crappy voices, but they fit with the crappy music so it's all good.
my classic example is Mark Knopfler. can he sing? i really don't think so, but in the context of his music he's great.

This is so. There is no point in trying to apply the criteria of opera or bel canto to singers in various genres of popular music. "Good" singing is always relative to how it projects the material. Great as he was, even Paul Robeson would have sounded out of place doing Howling Wolf tunes.
The only guy I can think of who could have done both was Screamin' Jay Hawkins. He should have played Othello.
E: In general, and IMHO, technique and timbre are negotiable qualities. Pitching, however, is not. Phrasing ability is always a plus, as is lyrical sensibility.
They don't have to be opera singers, but they should be good singers. Their are some really good singers in rock, when those bands where at their height. Deep Purple, Dio, Queensryche....................
I hate that excuse for rock singers. Rock and metal would be take more seriously if more of these guys would get off their lazy asses and take some lessons from a good coach. It would be a lot listenable live too.
Why is it that the instrumental players in rock are expected to be great on their instruments, but it's OK if a rock singer goes on stage live and his voice is awful compared to the studio record. Cop out, quit giving them excuses. We need more good singers in rock.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings but even my friends who love DT (which bores me to death) agree with the fact that La brie is indeed a bad singer, He's good in studio, but I think live he doesn't cut it.

infact so many of the people here are what you would describe as stylized even in a rock n roll sense... David Bowie's voice may grate, but he's an effortless, almost pitch perfect singer... a more modern person maybe Bjork, who has a unique sense of vocal style, and not to everyones taste, but to others like me, I think she's an incredible talent...

Thought I would bump this thread and add the lead singer of the "Break out band of 2008" Five Finger Death Punch. I don't know if its that the guy can't sing or I just dislike his voice. Either way I don't see how they made it with those vocals.
Some of the best vocalists have been dissed here. I think some of you are watching too much American Idol.

Voices that are inconsistent: Stevie Nicks (but I do like 'Landslide'), Donald Fagan (slides into notes too often), Janis Joplin, Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Joe Walsh
Bad voices: Bob Dylan, Ringo, Yoko Ono
The funny thing is that the Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin and Donald Fagan have personality behind their voices that makes them interesting to listen too.

Sonic Youth being one of my favorite bands, I'll wholeheartedly agree that Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, and Lee Renaldo are not great vocalists. Poets who just can't sing. Do I love Sonic Youth any less for that? Not at all.
