edit: More specifically, if I were to buy an HPF to fix my current rig would it bring any tangible benefit to the planned new rig?

From what I've heard, the Fdeck HPF is very good. Whether or not it would benefit a Valkyrie/ML112 rig would really be up to your own ears. It's never a bad thing to loose those sub-sonics as long as it doesn't compromise the tone you are after. Would it really be necessary? I think that it's not really an issue because of the DEEP control on the amp. If you are really pushing your drivers too hard, then your ears are going to let you know that. Rolling off the DEEP control and boosting the BASS control instead should really cut those sub-sonics out quite nicely.

I just got the Fdeck, and the only reason really because I noticed the limiter kicking in a bit on my STl900, not because of my mL112. The ML showed no indication whatsoever of being able to handle the low frequencies, whereas other cabs I have/had struggled with those frequencies.

So rest assured at least for the ML112, and from my experience, you will have no problem with sub frequencies. Unless of course you're blowing square waves into it then it wont matter what amp/cab you are using. Hopefully as Roger stated, the deep switch on the Valkyrie will help with sub frequencies if needed.

However, The FDeck does work quite well and definitely tightens up the low end when needed. For me, it is a great little box, built well for a great price, and a nice handy little tool to add to your bag of tricks.

I've had my ML112 for about a month now. Working in a start up band with gigs starting this summer so I haven't really been able to check in a live situation yet. I'd imagine that one ML112 will be enough for me for most gigs but was wondering if it would be weird or bad to pair up with a Berg EX112 if I need the extra cab. I know I should probably get another ML112, but I like the Berg cab too and I don't really want to part with it.

Are the designs so different that the sound waves will clash and be out of phase? Should I just let my ears by the judge?

I have run the ML112 with a Berg CN112 and it sounded good at home in the studio. I haven't gigged that combination but I have a lot of shows with a single ML112, a few with the pair of ML112s, and a few with a single CN112 as well as one show running a pair of the CN112s (I subsequently sold the second Berg). My hunch is that the ML112/EX112 would be ok, but I think a pair of ML112s probably will sound better in a loud/dense mix. The ML112 is the only 1-12 cab I've owned/played that can be pushed hard as a single cab solution and still has meat without getting harsh or flabby.

Let your ears be the judge. In my case I decided to keep one CN112 because it is 28 lbs and small so for certain gigs where I need to go as small and light as possible it is a good choice. The Baer sounds bigger to my ears though, and is more articulate. The EX112 isn't especially light though (I think the ML112 weighs less) so not sure the advantage there unless you really dig the sound. Last night's gig reminded me why the ML112 is my first-call cabinet.

I play with two different groups in which one is actually a basement jam band. It's kind of a cool situation because we just play for the music and don't have to worry about song choice. I leave the Berg over there and it works out great. I guess the newness of the Berg has worn off because I don't think I'd ever leave the ML112 there. I just figured I might try using them together if I ever needed extra power.

I've checked out some threads regarding mixing cabs after I posted my previous message and see there are a lot of different opinions regarding this. I should have probably abstained from even asking the question. I guess I've been lurking her for some time and wanted to find a way to join the discussion.

Anyway, thanks for the response. I've listened to some clips of your band(s) and really enjoy your music.

My ML112 sounds great with the Streamliner 900. They appear to be a good match. I'm using an American Standard Jazz with the setup.

I know some others have tried these together before. How do you rate this combination as compared to other amps and basses?

I'm kinda torn on the STL 900 but not so much because of paring with the ML, I just think the amp itself. The bass on the STL is a little loose and woofy for me so I find myself cutting back on it, and the treble, which I cut as well, is a bit hissy.

Overall I think it's a reslly good sounding head that the Baer easily handles and does offer a variety of tones, but I feel the STL900 is still missing a more defined tight bottom. I even tried an Fdeck HPF with it but I still think its quite not there for me and my preference. I just ordered a Jan Phillips 5751 to try in V1 to see if that works better for me. All in all I am happy with the STL, but just feel it misses the mark a bit, so I tend to use my Read Pre more. I have a Monique on order so I am anxious to hear how that will be, but ultimately waiting to try the Valkyrie which I'm hoping will be the ticket to tonal heaven. :)

Probably not the right thread and sorry it's off the Baer topic, but it seems I can get a better tone out the Streamliner when I really dig in. I can control my own tone with my hands better than other amps I've had in the past.

I would also try a JJ ECC83 S from Eurotubes in V1. My amp came from the factory with one in V1 and I have never experienced an issue with the low end on my STL. It is deep but fairly tight IME and IMHO.

I gigged the SL900 once, and sold it for those same reasons.
Not my bag. Big low end, not a lot of mids or highs.
May Sadowsky did not sound like a Sadowsky thru that amp.

ymmv, and plenty of folks like that head.

it's the lack of more options for mids for me. i took a lot of flack when it came out and i said i wish it had both low mid and high mid controls.

still, i got the amp and liked it for a while . . . now gone.

I agree with all those points about the streamliner, luckily with my bass I can dial in the mids I like so its not that much of an issue, its more about the low end for me. Its a nice back up amp for now, but I probably will wind up selling it as well.

So I know this is a Baer forum....

Roger besides the Valkyrie coming, any other plans for some compact cabs? Perhaps a compact 12 or a Compact 10/6??

For me, I would love to carry 2 - ML112's but they wont fit in the trunk of my car with my other gear, thats why I picked up the PJ Compact4 for now to go with the ML112. Unfortunately loading gear in the back seat is not an option for me because many times I leave straight from work to my gigs, so I need the equipment concealed.

I know, I'm waiting for it... Buy a bigger car! Well living in NYC you need the smallest car possible to fit in the limited parking spots.

So if no compact cabs are in your plans Roger, anyone else have any suggestions for a compact cab that might mate well with the ML112 (besides the Berg CN112)?

Roger put me at ease and tell me you have one in the works! :)

If his concern is "needs to be concealed cause it's in NYC," then, he needs a bigger truck....

2xML112, and everything else I need fit in the back of my Scion Xb, but, it's all visible thru windows.

I have been rocking two ML112's with a Mesa Walkabout for about a year now and love the tone of the combination. I can fit one cab in my trunk, and the other in the back seat. You can possibly tint your windows to obscure the contents.

Thank you Roger for making these cabs, and I'll be looking forward to reviews of your upcoming products.

When I have to leave stuff in the car, even in my SUV, ...not everything is entirely 'concealed' either. I use a moving blanket to at least cover everything so the casual passer-by won't know what is under the blanket. Could be anything. Sometimes that is my only sensible option. ...and yes, I have a secondary 'inland marine type' insurance policy that covers gear in my car. If you don't have one ...Get one! Your standard auto insurance only covers factory equipment. PS: I never leave my instruments in the car. They come into the office with me if I am gigging right after work.
