Baer Amplification Megathread!

Thanks, that was what I was kind of feeling when watching your videos. I wonder if I could get enough juice out with the 8 ohm load. I've come close before with the Mesa Powerhouse 212 cab I used to run at 8 ohms. The voicing of this cab may make up for the depreciated power output as it seems more "lively" than the Mesa did.

FWIW, your ear and knowledge of eq points and gear in general are a HUGE asset to our bass community. Hopefully I'll be able to catch you gigging somewhere now that you're living in WI (if you even play locally). I'd love to hear you in a live situation. I don't have many weekend nights off from playing (fortunately/unfortunately) but my wife would definitely go for us seeing you in person after all the YouTube voyurism I spend on your channel :ninja:

Thanks! We move around so much that I continue to work out of an agency in St. Louis, and mainly play privates in Chicago, Peoria, St. Louis, Kansas City, ec.. So, no local gigs at the moment. However, I'm ALWAYS up for a hang if you want to swing over to Sheboygan sometime!

I still do a limited amount of clubwork in St. Louis, as a sub for a few bands when their bass players have to take off.

FWIW, I really like the sound of the LMII with the ML112. B String has a LMII and a Shuttle 9.0, so I've heard them both numerous times and while he prefers the sound of the Shuttle 9.0, I prefer the sound of the LMII. The ML112 has a good deal of upper midrange sensitivity, so I think it works really well with a head like the LMII that has a relatively flat response. IMO, the class A/B power section of the LMII comes across as a little more old school sounding, with lots of low end thump, while a head like the Shuttle sounds more modern and articulate in the upper mids and top end.

Agreed. I think that smooth FET channel of the Shuttle Max 9.2 would also sound great through the ML112. Tonewise it might sit in between these two amps. The 9.2 is my favorite head through my 1212/66 build which uses the same Faital mids and it's sweet. A little high treble rolloff with the bass vintage tone control and it's smoother and not quite as "modern".

As Ken is always saying, "Its all about your tone goals".

If I've learned one thing, its that I really don't know clouds at all. Oops, sorry, I'm musing again...... I've learned that most gear sounds different on the gig or with other instruments than it does in the living room or bed room.

I actually really like the LMII with the Baer cab. When I got on the gig I just happened to like the 9.0 a little more. However, this has changed on different gigs. In some venues and some basses I prefer the LMII to the 9.0. My P5 likes the LMII a bit more. Actually, my P5 likes the ML-112 ..... a lot. I also can't stress enough how well the ML-112 works with the upright bass.

Nice one.

So long has it been since I heard this song, I had to 'tube it, and I came across the Joni Mitchell album version, and for the first time (very odd, growing up in Canada, etc). I must say, that was worth a few chills down my spine. Compared to the somewhat frivolous Judy Collins version that got tons of airplay it was quite a revelation.

Hijack over, back to regular programming.

One more comment... check out the full orchestra version with Herbie, Brain Blade, Wayne Shorter. Talk about chills. That particular disc isn't great, but the follow-up called 'Travelogue' is just unbelievable... Joni doing her hits with full 'jazz orchestra'. Kind of a 'last recording to document her body of work' sort of thing.

Great info, thanks. I just grabbed a 9.2 from the classifieds here. My next purchase will be one of these cabs as soon as I can get the scratch together. It sounds as though both will be different flavours of winning. I can't wait to get them all together.
Thanks again.

hey guys, how would the TC RH450 sound with these cabs? I got a pair of ML112's on order. I have been thinking about the Mesa Walk About. Just curious how the RH450 would work with these cabs. I wonder of the mid fwd focus of the WA and ML's would be too much of a good thing.

IMO, the EQ on the Walkabout takes a bit getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it is very powerful and offers a lot of control over your sound. The upper mid grind of the ML112's lies in the 1k to 3k region and the 3 band semi parametric EQ on the Walkabout lets you dial right in on that, so it's very easy to pull that back a bit, if you find that you need to. My guess is that you won't. While the upper mids can sound a bit "forward" in your living room, they really tend to sound less pronounced out on the gig amongst the other instruments.

The TC RH450 is MUCH more mid focused than the Walkabout. I would not recommend the RH450 with those cabs.

The great news about the M112 is that they are quite high efficiency, so heads like the Markbass F500, the LMIII, the Genz Shuttle, the GK MB500 will driver one or two quite nicely. The Markbass heads sound VERY good through these cabs IMO.

I'm really enjoying my Streamliner 900 through a pair of them. First gig with the rig was this weekend, and it was great - despite being in a corner. Will be interesting to get in some different rooms (and away from that boom).

I also own an 8ohm PH212, and comparing it, side by side, with the ML112, same amp, same bass, my perception is that is louder and a touch deeper, with the characteristically dark sound that Mesa cabinets are known for. The volume difference is no surprise, given the larger box and additional driver, but I also think the mid-forward nature of Roger's 112 makes it a very dynamic cabinet. Cranking it up a bit really highlights those snarling mids, which I think is a great thing in such a small package. A stack of them with an amp like the Streamliner 900 or an M6 would be fantastic, IMO.

Careful about what bass you pair the combo of these speakers & an M6 with. I've already done it. I've mentioned it and Roger has agreed that the aggressive/midrange nature of that head can add up with his cabs and a bright/snarly bass (like my Dingwall ABZ), and it can be a bit much for some players. It can be tamed and EQ'd, but be aware.

+1 from personal experience.
