Baer Amplification Megathread!

I think both drivers perform fairly equal and have similar tone, but the 500w driver will obviously handle more juice. With the 1000w version, I'm guessing most guys wold never need any more volume than that cab could provide. The 350w driver is a bit tighter and punchier, while the 500w driver is capable of deeper and stronger lows. Always trade offs.

The obvious answer is make both. :smug:

I can't wait to see why you come up with.

Being a one cab kind of guy and the current range of heads all seem to be about 800 watts, I would definitely prefer the 1000 watt cab. A sub 60 lbs cab is just fine for the level of performance.

That's kind of how I'm leaning. With so many class D head now putting out 800+ watts, having a 1000w 4 ohm cab would be a one cab solution for a lot of players.

Hey gang. Hope all is well with everyone. I have a question for you all. I'm wrapping up the design on some new cabs and had a question regarding the new 212 box. As is typical with my designs, size and weight are never my first design criteria, but I do like to keep those things in mind. I let the driver dictate the box size and I'm a big proponent of lots of bracing for a rock solid box. With the new 212 however, I am worried about where the weight is coming in at, so I'm debating a driver change that could shave some pounds off the designs.

The 112 cab will have a 500w driver, as I think that driver works fabulous in that box. But for the 212, that driver is adding considerable extra weight and I'm not really sure that level of horsepower is really needed in that box. So the question is, would you guys be prefer to see a 1000w 212 that comes in at 59lbs., or a 700w 212 that comes in at 53lbs? With the 500w drivers, the cab is an absolute beast, but the 350w driver is quite impressive as well, so performance is still pretty impressive. Cab size is roughly 20"w x 28"h x 15 3/4" deep.

6 lbs difference might be a bigger issue in a smaller cab, but I think for a 212 with those dimensions, the difference between 53 and 59 won't be noticed by most users, other than when looking at specs online. I'm not going to view 53 as particularly light, nor am I going to view 59 as particularly heavy.

Similarly, 700w vs 1,000w handling doesn't strike me as significantly different in real world application, but would certainly market better with a higher number.

With the heavier driver being bigger in the lows and the lighter being more punchy, I guess it depends on how low low is. If the lighter driver is plenty deep in the lows then more might be too much.

I can see the decision struggle. I don't fit the target market for the cab, and I'd probably even lean toward the 350 driver, which means the 500 is a better choice, because my picker is always wrong ;) It's really a marketing thing, as I see it. How do you want the cab to be viewed, and what does it look like next to the nearest competitors?

I could get on board with either, but I might just order 2 112's.

Players these days definitely prefer the modular setup, but if your'e doing medium to large gigs, I think a single 212 makes a lot of sense. First off, there's considerable savings to be had over buying two 112 cabs. The other thing is that the lows on a 212 are generally bigger sounding than they are on a single 112, due to the larger box size. So, for those players are typically play big clubs or outdoor gigs, there's a tonal advantage to one larger box.

But, there's a lot to be said for the modularity of two separate 112 cabs. Only dragging a single 112 cab for small gigs is always nice. I'm also putting the finishing touches on a 210 box and it sounds ridiculous on top of the 112.

Do the new 112 and 210 have mid drivers or HF horns? Interested to see the 210/112 stack.

2000w 4x12 next? ;)
I would love to do a 312, or 412 cab, but I think the 300w driver would work better for something that size, as it's a bit punchier and leaner sounding. And don't let the lower wattage rating fool you, those drivers are beast! The bigger question becomes how many players are really buying larger cabinets anymore? Seems like modular rigs have really become the norm these days.

The new cabs will have horns, but they won't be using a typical "bass tweeter". I spent a LOT of time searching for the right HF section for these cabs. As you know, I'm not a big fan of tweeters and although I tried a lot of really good sounding drivers, they all still had that familiar "tweeter sound" that has never really been my thing. This setup immediately struck me as having a similar timbre to a paper diver. You get the extended highs of a tweeter, but it feels warmer up top while the the lower treble range has a bit of that mid driver bite that is very reminiscent of the ML cabs. Definitely a very expensive HF section to produce, but I'm really happy with the results.

1) I have a lot of cabs; I've been using the ML112's exclusively this year with the exception of using a fF 15/6/1 for the few big outdoor things bf covid.

2) the physical thing I like about 2 ML112, how they sound aside, is stacking them vertically to get the sound up at ear level more. For some time, I've taken to carrying a small stand to elevate anything else I use, except when using 2 GK 112 vertical.

3) would the 210 stack with my first gen ML112? and: I'm sure you've tried both, but, you really prefer the 210 over 112 vs 112 over 210? Why is that?

Man, it's nice to hear new things are getting closer for Baer!!!
Been a long time since we've talked about any Baer Amplifcation having, ya know, actual amplification...;--)
Are there amps in the mad science lab?

How much of a difference in sound are we talking? For some people using tube or lower powered heads the 700w cab would already be more than enough from a power handling point of view. When talking about 2x12s, I'd rather go with more punchy than more lows, just because the size of the cab will already be meaty down low, right?

I personally find the weight difference pretty negligible. As long as the carry handles are comfy it should be a breeze to transport.

You know it's a funny thing, but because of all the years I played a 410 on top of a 115, I just naturally put the bigger driver on the bottom. My preferred method is the 112 horizontal on the bottom, with the 210 on top, but I can't say i hear much a difference and I certainly think I could vary the arrangement sending on the room acoustic. The 112 is 17"w x 20"h x 15.75d". The 210 is an inch wider at 18"w x 23.75"h x 15.75"d. If you want to stack them, you could put the 112 on the bottom horizontally, or put the 112 on top vertically.

Right now I'm just focused on the new cab line. It takes an enormous amount of cash to bring an amp to market, so the amp concept we were working on looks like it may end up as more of a preamp pedal at first. We'll see. We are also tinkering with a redesign of the Di box as an all tube design.

After testing with several players over the last month, we are definitely going with the 500w driver for the 12" cabs. Everyone preferred the sound of that driver. In the 212 configuration, it is just a beast.

Could you share a picture and any preliminary specs you might have on the 210?

Sorry for the delay. Here's a photo of the new 112 and 210 cabinets, which will be the first two cabinets in the new lineup. The production cabs will have a slightly different grill, but I'm still waiting on those to come in. Sourcing parts has been very difficult because of the pandemic, but I'm hoping that with a little luck, these will be ready to go around the first of the year.

Prelim Specs:
112 - 500w 8Ω 17"w x 20"h x 15.75"d 38lbs.
210 - 600w 8Ω 18" x 23.75"h x 15.75"d 46lbs
