Both the fretted 5 and fretless 6 are built by Chris Benavente. Good luck with your search... I used a Bag End stack throughout the 90s (S12 + S15) then jumped through some of the early Y2K buzz brands of TB before circling back to Bag End. They just consistently sound great in any situation I've put them in.

I started a different thread on TB seeking advice and recommendations for a small cab for 5 string fretless bass to be powered by a 50W all tube head for low volume, small venue gigs in a duo or trio situation.

There were some glowing recommendations for BagEnd and after looking at their website it seems that the S15X-B fits my criteria, although it is a bit heavier than I would like. However, there has been some doubt expressed about the 103dB sensitivity rating stated by BagEnd for this driver/cab and whether it can in fact perform well for my purposes with a 50W head.

Advice? Comments? Thank you.

i use my portaflex sb12 ~20-25 watts with one or two of these guys. they just come alive with the tube power. i also own a barefaced super compact and i love the barefaced line, but i gotta say, for the same amount of power the bag end is WAY louder, more present and has a sweeter tone. i dont think youll be disappointed!

id say dive bars, cafes or garages with that set up. id use something bigger if i was in doubt. when i was playing with a country band alot id use one BE s15 with a 60w bassman or the tonehammer 350 ( and foh ) and it would be plenty.
one thing is that it doesn’t have mega low end if you’re into phat dub sounds.

OK, thanks. I do use all of the notes on the B string and I do want the maximum low extension possible but I definitely don't do fat, reggae tones; I strive for something more "stringy" with harmonics - here's a weird mixture: piano clarity but with double bass richness

Also, my days of playing 4 or 5 sets a night with a dance band are long past (mercifully). I'm into a duo or trio playing listening or background music for a couple of comparatively low volume sets. You know, like "Two shows nightly"

yea. exactly. its gonna be great. they can "handle" all the low frequencies you could throw at em, they're just not going to over emphasize the sub. thats not their character. Bag End makes other cabs if you want to rattle your teeth fillings out and rearrange your neighbors furniture, etc

A single 15 will more than accommodate your monitor needs. Two 15's with my AJ contrabass and a GK200MB move my kidneys and liver to different areas of my body cavity. Honestly go play one, you wont be disappointed.

1000W of tube amp would probably be using transmitter tubes with voltages that could drop an elephant and would weigh so much that at least one roady would be needed to move it

One aspect that hasn't been discussed so far is the dispersion characteristic of the SB15X-B. For small venues, small stage, audience on three sides, that is important to me.

I had a phone conversation with JIm Wischmeyer of BagEnd today about the S15X-B that I'm interested in. He said that neo drivers are available for custom order for 10", 12" and 15" cabs but none with co-ax, so they will roll off about 4-4.5kHz.

I’d have to hear that neo before I dropped the money. I tried several neo cabs over a few years and kept coming back to the non-neo S15 cabs. The only cab I’ve ever liked as much is the Berg NV115 which is also non-neo.

Yes, it is a matter of personal taste - genre of music and what our mind thinks it wants to hear. I wish that I knew much more about the field of psychoacoustics
