Bag End Stack in the House!

Well, I have finally decided that the Bag End S15D just doesnt sound good to me and that I am giving up on it and selling it. I kept trying it, thinking 'oh its just the room'. But last night I played it in what I know to be a "bass friendly" practice room and still it wasnt happening for me. Very compressed low-end and the distinct flavour of the highs doesnt appeal to me. So I put the BE back in my car and plugged into a Trace Elliot 410. Sounded wonderful. This is with my LMII.

On paper this cab looks fantastic, but tonally its just not my cup of tea.

I use a Hughes&Kettner Basse400 head (+ Alembic F1X pre sometimes) going into a BE S15-D / BE S15LXD stack and I am happy!!!
Being a bigger cab the S15LXD sounds fuller than the S15XD, and with both cabs paired this stack really shines.
I am a bit worried BASSIST didn't like the BEs with the LMII head since I've been seriously considering the LMII as an option.
Any other opinions here????

I was going to ask BASSIST if he had tried the BE on a gig as the sound in a live mix will be different to the solo sound.

Based on descriptions of the LMII tone, I would think it would be a great match for BE cabs (of course, might not float everyone's boat as per varying tastes in tone).

Too bad since you went to so much effort to get one in the first place... That's the same kind of experience that I've had with Eden cabs...keep trying (although I never purchased one), but just don't like 'em.

Though, I havent played it on a gig, I have tried it at least a half dozen times with my band. All I know from experience is that the character of the highs I get from this cab really rub me the wrong way. There is no tweeter so I cant turn them down... well I can with my amp I suppose. But then the lows arent there either. I tried boosting the lows with both the bass eq and VLE on my LMII and really I just got more squished lows. The A & D strings were very punchy but the E was just thud, thud, thud in a bad way. Again I should mention that I am VERY picky about tone. I've owned Epifani, EA, Eden and Schroeder cabs and have used many different cabs including Ampeg, Trace Elliot and GK at rehearsal and I much prefer any of those cabs to what I was getting from the BE.

I also tried putting a tube pre in my chain with an ART Studio V3 but it didnt improve things. With my schroe 1212R, that ART Studio V3 really makes my LMII kick serious butt.

Its a bit redundant to have a BE S15D and 1212R in some respects as they are somewhat similar in the volume and size, but tonally they are totally different... even though both of them are "low-mid heavy" cabs.

Take this all with a grain of salt. Many love the BE sound, but its not for me. I guess the best way to find out is try it for yourself.

I think I might buy another wizzy.

I finally added a S15-D to my S15X-D, and am hoping I will get a little more bottom with both cabinets. The nice thing is, I can still use just one of the boxes depending on the situation; with or without the tweeter.

I have not tried them both together at a gig yet, but has anyone noticed a big difference on the low end using both, not just more volume but more lows ?

My S15 stack does provide a little more in the low end than an S15 by itself.

I think the point that continually needs to be made is that the Bag End S15 cabs are not designed to put out bucketloads of the lowest frequencies. It's not necessary for folks to post that they are not happy with the lows. It's the nature of the design. They are supposed to be very compact, portable, loud and punchy cabs that do great with 60 Hz and up, which is where the vast majority of bass guitar output exists. One can always add judicious amounts of bass boost EQ.

The S15s are exceedingly good cabs for their intended purpose. They aren't designed to sound like subwoofers.

It's clear you don't like S15s, and that's fine. It's not necessary to keep saying so in this thread, which is for the people who DO like Bag End S15s.

So I just have one S-15D and love it. Thinking about adding another cab and debating which one - another s-15D or an S-12D....guys who have either of these combinations, any thoughts?
I am using a NEo-Pak head, run a bunch of effects generally with a Fender of some configuration and play Rock. I don't like tweeters, so highs are not a real concern of mine. Any thoughts?

I have the Bag End ELF system with a D10BX-D and a S18E-D with a M2 ELF processor - the thing has low end for miles. I use an Alembic F1X preamp, but unfort i have a crappy old Crown Powertech 2 amp, which doesn't do the system justice...

What do other folks use as a poweramp for their ELF system? I would think a QSC PLX1804 (600w/channel) would work well, & my back would appreciate the light weight...

With the powertech its not quite loud enough for a full rock band, i hope with a better amp it would be. Maybe add another D10BX as well...

Congrats. This has been my usual setup for a long time now.
I played one loud gig with my 210 on top of the 15`s. NOw thats what I call rig of doom. You can see how tall it was in that tiny picture.
