Bag End Stack in the House!

Hey guys, nice to see this very long thread discussing Bag End. I remember the first time I plugged in to a S15 with a used Eden WT-600. I bought the damn Eden right on the spot and ordered myself a D12-D. I liked 12s as up to that point my rig was two different single 12" combos - a Trace Elliot and a Roland.

I can't help but think I should have got two S15s though as I'd like the coaxial speaker and the D12 can be a real prick to lug around by myself.

But as luck would have it my dad is looking at a dual S15 bass rig so if he gets it I will have a few chances to gig with them before I move out. Although I am thinking of a D10 if I add anything to this rig - the Eden will pump real nice with 4 ohms a side.

Anyway my rig's in there somewhere:

Edit: Found a good pic of the rig.

Tumnus,

Wow, what a good direct visual illustration of the size of these cabs. Good to see 'em all like that.

How does the low end of the D12-C compare to the D10BX-D? The latter is quite a bit deeper. Also, how does the weight compare?

On paper, a D12 is only 10% heavier and only marginally larger than a D10BX. However, it seems that the handles are in the wrong spot on just about all of the Bag End cabs I tried. As you can see on the pics, the handles on the D12 are mounted quite high. As a result, if you lift that cab by its handles you end up bumping your knees into it which is not fun. The D10's you are supposed to carry them horizontally, but if you do that you end up being about as wide as the average door and one day or another you will hurt you fingers badly. To make a long story short, if I need to carry any of these cabs I usually grab them by two opposite corners. With the D10X that's very easy, with the D10BX it is not a problem. With the D12 it is inconvenient.

The D12 is definitely more powerful than either D10 alone. It is very loud and articulate, depending on the room it might sound a bit harsh, which can be cured with a bit of EQ (cut 3-6 dB around 1kHz with a wide Q). These characteristics help it cut through which is usually a good thing. It won't sound boomy very easily although it has quite a bit of depth. A pair of D10s should be as loud, but the high-mids are somewhat subdued (compared to the D12). The D10s are more prone to sounding boomy, which doesn't necessarily mean they have an extended low end. It's very subjective and depends a lot on your other gear (bass, amp) and playing style. I play pop / rock / jazz using a 5-string J-style bass (BEADG) and I don't feel any of these cabs, even used alone, is giving me insufficient low end response.

Btw. the specs of the discontinued cabs are still available online: Invalid Link Removed

Hope this helps!

Tumnus,

So I take it the D12-D is still available. If I remember correctly, there was a time when you could get their 12" speakers in a coax version, i.e. S12X-D and D12X-D. But I don't know if they have that driver still available (I'm inclined to having a tweeter, and the BE coaxial is, to me, very unobtrusive). They've been known to do sort of custom jobs for certain people, if it isn't too outside the box (pardon the pun!). I've got a mixed pair of the small fifteens, but the D12-D looks enticing!

Last year, I briefly owned a D12X-D that ended up in the hands of Emblymouse. He recently passed it along to someone else.

He told me that there were very few coax 12s made and most of them were S12X-Ds...so D12X-Ds are around, but quite rare.

Thanks for the insights on the D12. I'm thinking about pairing one with one or two S15D's. Seems like it would be a killer combination.

JR

Although I have briefly played with one S15-D I didn't compare it side by side with the D12. I'd be very interested to hear the comments in case anyone did.

That's interesting indeed. There is no mention of 12" drivers with coax anywhere on their website. I completely agree with you on this tweeter being unobtrusive: it doesn't get in your way like with many other brands. That said, the D12 already sounds quite bright without any tweeter. I once let the guitar player in my band try the cab and we were positively surprised by the sound.

To no avail thus far, we asked Bassybill and IvanMike, and other amp mods, for a Bag End Megathread most of 2007. This thread, started in October 2006, has more or less turned into the Bag End megathread! I'm honored.. :)

Keep the discussion coming guys.. at some point, it will catch the mods' attention and they'll do the deed..

I noticed this thread only recently. The emphasis seems to be mostly on S15 variants and a few Q10s, so I thought I'd post a few pics of D12 and D10's for a change.

+1 on the megathread, Bag End rocks!

Happy 2008 y'all!

I recently picked up a S15B-C, which will be paired up with my Q10X-D. I'm really looking forward to playing with this rig. For the present I'll be using it with my old school amps: either an Acoustic 370 or an SVT.

I also have a really neat and unusual BE cab: a D15B-B. That's a 2x15 cab that is basically equivalent to two S15B cabs in one big box. Each speaker is in its own compartment. Through an old thread here and some correspondence with Bag End, I discovered that although it was never part of their regular lineup, they did build a few as custom orders for people. It's an amazing cab and sounds great, but it's a bit bulky to move around, compared to the S15B/Q10X setup.

this thread gave me GAS which made me recently acquire these:
